Description: Album of photographs of New Zealand (pages 1-10), Australia, Egypt, Europe and Canada taken by unidentified photographers circa 1880s. The New Zealand scenes are mostly in the South Island, including the Bealey, Cheviot Hills Station, the flying fox across the Teremakau [i.e. Taramakau] River, the Canterbury Plains, Governor's Bay and Timaru. One view shows two men in a logging camp; two views of the North Island show Muemutu [i.e. Ohinemutu], and Russell's Gold Battery at Taruru Creek. Australian scenes include a group of New Caledonian Kanaka with their "humpies" (thatched dwellings) at Bundaberg in Queensland; and one of the Wombat Ranges "the haunt of the Kelly gang". Several photographs of Egypt include views of Port Said, the Suez Canal, camels, Egyptians, and early ruins. Canadian images include Port Levis taken from across the St Lawrence River, and views of the Niagara and Montmorency Falls both in summer and in winter. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai. Description: Album of images taken by various photographers, some of whom are identified, probably between 1870 and 1899. Views of New Zealand (tourist scenes of the South Island include the West Coast, Queenstown-Lakes District; and of the North Island include thermal areas around Lake Rotomahana, Ohinemutu, and Wairakei). These are interspersed with scenes in the West Indies, India, and Australia. Names of places shown in the album are listed above. Pages 29-30 show images of "SS Tarawera" in Wet Jacket Arm. Pages 30-32 show views of one or possibly two ships. The names in pencilled captions are not clear. The ship on page 30 appears to have the name RMSS Rune [or Rane, or Rome], but on page 32 that name is crossed out and appears to be RMSS Shamun? However the name on page 31 appears more like RMSS Shannon, and photographs of the Shannon appear very like the full image in this album on page 30, in which the ship is sailing through "the canal". Description: According to the inscription inside the front cover (by an unidentified person), the date is firmly established as 1884, however the album has a number of photographs of the Tarawera area, both before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. These include views of the White Terraces, one of which has a group of Maori cooking food in the hot pools; a carved house at Te Wairoa, showing interior and exterior before the eruption, and the exterior afterwards; a group of Maori at Te Ariki (one of the places most devastated in the eruption with the loss of many lives. This image has the inscription `Natives of te Ariki first to be killed by eruption'); views of Mount Tarawera covered in mud and ash; and the Old Mill, destroyed in the eruption. Many of the images have the signature initials J.M. (Josiah Martin), and a few have the initials F.A.C (Frank Arnold Coxhead) who may have taken them, but which may just have been printed by him. The last few views are in Tasmania, including Burnie - Emu Bay, and the Guide Falls, near Burnie. Inscriptions: Album page - `Ex libris Brent Gration-Maxfield. 1967'; Album page - `New Zealand. 1884. Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s (some dated 1868), and about 1870. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from comparison with handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p 51) Early photographs of Wellington show a view down Boulcott Street, a view probably from Boulcott Street looking down over `Rhodes Bay' (now the reclaimed area beyond Willis Street), and looking towards the city from Thorndon. One view in the North Island shows the Kinross residence in Napier. Most of the photographs are of central North Island, with particular emphasis on the volcanic areas around Lake Taupo, Lake Rotomahana, the Waikato River (including the Huka Falls and Aniwhaniwha Falls), Tokaanu, Ohinemutu and the Pink Terraces. Several scenes show military outposts and redoubts, including two of Captain Gilbert Mair "and his men" (the Arawa Flying Column), at Kaiteriria Pa, Rotokakahi "just arrived after a raid after Te Kooti"; and one of the interior of the pa "with Captain Mair's contingent". In the South Island scenes include Lyttelton, Akaroa Harbour, the Otira River and Gorge, Bealey River, the summit of Arthurs Pass, the Porters Pass Hotel, Taramakau River, Gibson's Quay at Hokitika, one of several small churches at Hokitika, and Hereford Street (Christchurch). New Zealand views include Auckland, Tikitapu Bush, Waitakere Creek, Pink & white Terraces, Atiamuri, Ohinemutu, Wairakei, Napier, Wellington, Upper Hutt, McNab's Gardens (Lower Hutt), the Teremakau river and cable car, Nelson, Westland, Otira Gorge, Taipo, the Waimakariri River, Christchurch, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, Dunedin and Invercargill. Pacific views include Rarotonga, Samoa, Fiji (including Suva), New Caledonia, Tahiti and Hawaii. Photographers represented include George Valentine, James Connolly, Wheeler & Son, J R Morris, and Hart, Campbell & Co. Includes of gold mining and sluicing in Westland, HM ships Ringarooma and Hyacinth, and games of croquet and polo in Hawaii. HMS Hyacinth, a 3rd class cruiser commissioned in 1886, cruised in the Pacific under the command of Captain Edmund G Bourke RN.
