West Coast Mining album

Description: Very clear views of West Coast gold and coal mines (mainly in the Reefton subdivision), and mining towns, taken by unidentified photographers, except for one of "Wondrous Waiuta New Zealand" Jos. Divis Photo (p 27). Views on various roads include the Reefton to Blackspoint Road, Reefton to Westport Road, the Buller Gorge, the Maruia Road alongside the Inangahua River, Progress Road, and fording a river near Progress Mill. Images relating to mines include a winter picture of the old Wealth (of Nations) waterwheel covered in icicles; and gold batteries at various stages of development. Gold mines include the Progress Mine, Wealth of Nations Mine, Welcome Mine, the Mountain Battery at Boatman's Creek, the Blackwater Mine and the Globe Mine. Coal mines include views of Lanky's Creek Coal Mine, and the Lanky's Creek to Energetic coal tramway showing new bridges and coal miners. One photograph (p 9) shows several men "beach combing" for gold on the West Coast. Description: Correspondence and diary of William Mortimer Baines who came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. The papers deal with his interests in mining, timber and land. Includes letters from the Fooks, Dixon and Hunt families of Australia. Includes letters from Maryanne Verdon Baines (1859-1869), mostly to her husband after his departure for England. These are concerned to a large extent with her loneliness in Auckland and with plans for her voyage to England. In addition there are a number of letters written in 1869, by Maryanne and William's children, Fanny, Katherine and Rosa. Source of title - Supplied William Mortimer, came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. In 1869 he returned to Britain, although he retained a financial interest in land in New Zealand. Other views show areas of the South Island, including Dunedin City, Oamaru, Christchurch; and the North island including Auckland, Thames District (a number showing aspects of gold mining in the area). Description: Comical drawings of officers of the Pandora, along with Gold Commissioner, Charles Heaphy, at the Coromandel goldfields The hand-writing is that of Theodore Morton Jones, the drawing by Charles Heaphy. The officers on the expedition were Lieut. Jones and Messrs Oke, William Stanley, Cuming, William Blackney, Andrew Farmer, Leck, Thomas Hooper Kerr and Ellis. The Pandora's Master in 1852 was Byron Drury and her surgeon was John Jolliffe and they are both mentioned in the captions to the drawings. Extended Title - Spine title: Drawings of the Coromandel gold field. Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s) containing 4 cartoons in 1/2 morocco binding. Physical Description: 4 pencil and watercolour drawings 140 x 230 mm Provenance: By descent from Rear-Admiral T. Morton Jones, who was serving as a Lieutenant aboard H. M. S. Pandora, stationed off Auckland in Sept-Oct. 1852. He joined a party of fellow-officers for a gold-prospecting picnic to the diggings at Coromandel. Listed in the Museum Book Store Catalogue (London) in 1915, 1923 and 1927, then purchased (already bound) by Dr Charles A. O. Fox, of Lynch Cottage, Llanmorlais, Gower, Wales. He mentioned them in a letter to the Library dated 14 March 1960 (TL3/1/1) and they were subsequently acquired by the Library after passing through the hands of dealers Newricks and Bethunes.

Description: O'Halloran arrived in Australia in 1860 from Ireland and held a variety of jobs in Melbourne and Victoria before coming to New Zealand in 1861. He worked at gold mining in Otago, hotel and store-keeping, driving and contracting in the Thames, Auckland, and central North Island. He spent nine years with the Mounted Militia, 1865-1874, in Taranaki, central North Island and East Coast and saw frequent action. O'Halloran returned in Australia in 1884. Description: Album appears to have been owned by J Alexander as it came into the possession of his son F R Alexander. Photographs taken by A G Jackson (and possibly also by his companions on the trip - H.A.F Jackson and J Alexander) in 1887 on a penny-farthing cycle trip from Christchurch to the West Coast, have been added to an existing album of commercial photographs of yachting on The Solent, England. Most of the yachts are named. Named yachts include 'Queen Eleanor', 'Silver Star', 'Raven', 'Bonina', 'Buttercup', 'Mavourneen', 'Nonparelle', and 'Vanessa'. Description: Comprises folders of letters from David Ziman to his son, Herbert, and to wife, Lena, correspondence with his brother, Jacob Ziman, some newspaper clippings and papers relating to the disposal of his estate after his death. Also includes papers relating to North Blackwater Mines Ltd and the Consolidated Gold Mines Company. Source of title - Supplied Arrangement: Shortly before his death, Herbert Ziman arranged his father's papers in the order as listed. David Ziman, a founding member of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, had his attention drawn to the quartz gold mining potential at Reefton, which in 1895 was in depression. With the Rothschilds backing, Ziman formed the Consolidated Gold Fields of New Zealand Ltd which mined at Reefton until 1951.
