Dicken, 1879; sister Ada Dicken, 1876-1899, Beatrice `Bebe' Knight, 1899, and Eleanor Inman, 1873-1899; Emma Packe, n.d.; her aunt Augusta Parker, 1875-1889; and Amelia Soder, 1885; referring to domestic events. Includes reminiscences of her childhood in England written between 1891 and 1905. Also essays, recipe books, poetry, sketches and other writings, as well as some personal material associated with her husband who had a private school for boys at French Farm, Akaroa Includes shipboard diary kept by T S Baker on board the Dallam Tower, 11 May-26 Jul 1873, and a fragment of the original passenger list. The ship left London in May 1873. The ship encountered a cyclone in July 1873 which dismasted the ship. Some passengers were transshipped to the `Cape Clear' for Sydney and others stayed on the `Dallam Tower' to Melbourne where they transshipped to the SS Albion for the final voyage to New Zealand Josephine `Dodo' Dicken emigrated from England in 1873 with her father Thomas and sisters and brothers. The Family settled on a property at French Farm, Banks Peninsula. She married Thomas Southey Baker in Christchurch, 17 December 1878. They had four daughters. Description: The essay is the story of Patrick Donovan, an Irishman who came to Auckland in 1840 with his first wife, Julia McAuliffe and their children. They first went to Hobart and then Melbourne before arriving in New Zealand. He established himself in business in Auckland as innkeeper of the Shamrock, Rose and Thistle, Shortland Crescent, and later farmed at Onehunga. He was the owner of land in various parts of Auckland. In 1853 he was elected to the Auckland Provincial Council, serving till 1855. Julia died in 1845 and he remarried Elizabeth Scott in the same year. Description: `From pioneer days to centennial year' by J McHale of Burwood, written ca 1950 recounts the story of Mr & Mrs McHale, and their four children, in particular Harry McHale. The family commenced their voyage from Bristol to Lyttelton on the `Cashmere' in 1859. An epidemic of measles broke out and the ship returned to England. Mrs McHale and 3 children (including Harry) were put ashore while Mr McHale and the elder son continued onto New Zealand on the `Cashmere'; Mrs McHale and children came onto New Zealand in the `Zealandia' a few months later. The family first settled at Pigeon Bay. Mr McHale obtained work as a carpenter erecting new buildings for Mr Montgomery's sawmilling business. After a year or two McHale bought land at Little Akaloa at a small bay called Raupo Bay. Also `Memoirs of Pigeon Bay' by H J McHale, pioneer (mss in pencil). Description: Collection comprises near-daily journal entries kept by Ford from 1950 to 1986 on his calibration flights to check routes before they were used by commercial flights. Although the journal entries chiefly concern his working life with Calibration Flight, he also writes about his personal life and bringing up a family. The collection includes records of royal visit and VIP flights. Also includes reports, newspaper clippings, interviews and background files. Also contains newspaper clippings that collected by Ford relating to aeronautical topics, and articles, columns and cartoons on other subjects of interest to Ford. Other items include a selection of receipts, pamphlets, brochures and other ephemera collected by Ford during his trips to the Pacific Islands. As well as depicting the history of Calibration Flight, this collection also provides a snapshot of New Zealand life from the 1950s to 2000, as seen through the eyes of John Ford Source of title - Supplied by Library Calibration Flight was part of the New Zealand Civil Aviation Division, Ministry of Transport. It was responsible for ensuring that all flight paths and navigational aids in New Zealand were accurate. It flew VIPs, including royalty, around New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
