Description: Photographs of Kamo (Whangarei), Rodney County and Coromandel, taken, probably in the 1900s, by Daniel P Parker of Coromandel. Includes views of the construction on a timber dam (probably in Coromandel), Coromandel Public Hospital, Kennedy Bay (Coromandel), a stream crossing between Opitonui and Coromandel, bush camps in the Coromadel district and a traffic bridge in Rodney County. Daniel P Parker is recorded in the Wise's Post Office directories as an engineer in Coromandel from 1902 to 1930. Between 1906 and 1911 he is also recorded as a photographer. Description: The collection covers mining buildings; interior machinery including the use of scales and smelting; miners both at work and posed for the camera; panning for gold; mine railways and the carts used on them; general views of the area; and other houses and buildings in the area. Also included are the building of the power house for the Talisman Gold Mining Company in Karangahake, a gold mine battery possibly in Karangahake, and a coach pulled by five horses possibly in the Karangahake district. The dating is from the vehicles in some of the images and the geographical area is from information in the negative accession register. Photographer possibly H R Vine. Description: Photographs of New Zealand scenes taken between circa 1890s and circa 1940s, chiefly by James Caleb Cornwall. Many images have a brief explanatory captions. Contains images including a kapa haka group performing on a barge, a building decorated for Royal [Coronation 1937?] with cameo portraits of George VI and Queen Elizabeth, animals at a zoo (pelican and [thar?]), a thermal area, and a bush scene. Transportation is featured, with photographs showing trains (locomotives and carriages, including a Fairlie locomotive) and railway architecture (train tracks and Main Trunk Line viaduct) as well as car and horse and cart scenes. Places and buildings include Hastings Main Street, Blenheim Memorial (clock tower and fountain), Palmerston North (including birds on pond [Domain?], a church, shops, and the main square), Arthurs Pass and Porters Pass, a Coromandel homestead, house and garden of Cara [Sawings?], and [Otago Settlers?] Museum, Dunedin. Description: View from a hill above Coromandel looking down at the curve of the waterfront, with cottages, tents, sailing ships and canoes, the hills south of Coromandel in the distance The watercolour was also reproduced as a wood engraving in the Illustrated London news, vol 23, no. 656, p. 465, 3 December 1853. The copyist is possibly the donor, C. W. Hawkins. The conference held at Coromandel in 1853 was between Maori chiefs and Lieutenant-Governor Wynyard, concerning the purchase of the land containing the Coromandel goldfields. Description: Photographs of Auckland and Coromandel, taken between 1880 and 1901 by an unknown photographer. Includes views of Parsons & Fowler families (1890), St Heliers Bay (1890), Imperial Troops in the Auckland Domain, an arch erected for the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901, Onehunga Hotel in Princess Street, the Auckland Domain, Views of Northcote, Birkenhead, and Birkenhead Wharf (1880), tradesmen's processions in Domain, and the Mercer Regatta. This group of negatives have crenelated notches along their sides. This indicates that they were manufactured for a Frena Camera. This camera was the first type of film-pack camera. (see "Deja View 37," August 2003, edited and published by Bill Main, Wellington, New Zealand). Information that came with these negatives is filed at PAColl-8960, and is in the Photograph Archive collections sequence. Description: Album of photographs taken during the 1860s by various photographers. All the images are related to Colonel William Marvin (1834-1915) who came to New Zealand circa 1858 and was possibly attached to the 70th Regiment of Foot during the New Zealand wars. There are many photographs relating to military activity, including military working parties at Fort Britomart; military and naval camps at Maungatawhiri Creek, Queen's Redoubt, Drury, Ngaruawahia and Albert Barracks; a monument to the 43rd Regiment at Gate Pa near Tauranga; Potatau's tomb with a sentry guarding it; and the Auckland cemetery. Many of the images are of Auckland, including `Hale's Boarding House, where I first slept in N.Z.'; `The Masonic Hotel where I was made a mason in 1861'; `My last batchelor home near Constitution Hill green, next door to the Dacres'; `St. Mary's where I was married 4th August 1862'; a long sequence showing Queen Street from different angles in 1866'; and various homes that he knew, including Heaphy's house in St George's Bay, Dillon Bell's House in Parnell, and `Little Sutton' in St. George's Bay. Other images of interest include a mining camp at Coromandel; the tree on which Volkner was hanged, with a seated group of Maori beside a whare; a Maori church that is completely thatched, in the Waikato; and two views of the sailing ship Ida Ziegler [i.e. Zeigler] `In which we returned from N.Z. round Cape Horn, 29th Jany to 1st May 1867'.
