Description: Consists of a small amount of correspondence, 1906-1913; diary entries, with gaps, Jan 1913-Jan 1917; notebooks, dated 1881-1912, six of which are labelled McL 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and 8 respectively, containing entries relating to specific birds and egg and feather finds and various bird-watching trips including many to Cape Kidnappers, Tutira and other areas in Poverty Bay and Hawkes Bay and one to Stewart Island and loose notes also relating to specific birds and to trips; newspaper clippings of columns and articles relating to natural science and history and to ornithology, 1888-1916 and copies of articles written by McLean. Source of title - supplied title Relationship complexity - see also MS-Papers-2145 John Chambers McLean was educated at Nelson College and then farmed Waitohu Station, Poverty Bay in partnership with his father. He was a keen ornithologist, belonged to many ornithological and related societies and published in `Ibis', the journal of the Zoological Society of London. These include extensive correspondence and subject files arranged alphabetically by correspondent or topic that cover all aspects of the Society's operations. Also included are Executive Committee minute books, financial records, papers relating to membership, papers relating to the Society's local administration, publicity material and scrapbooks of cuttings. In addition there are papers relating to individual members of the Society including a notebook and a diary of tramps by Sydney Berg; `Observations concerning some species of New Zealand birds' by H H Travers; two autobiographical accounts by A H Gibson and papers of Perrine Moncrieff, including correspondence, notes, 1933 accounts of trips to Stephens Island, articles and clippings. Includes recordings of Forest and Bird Society radio talks titled 'San Michele,' 'Forests,' 'Conservation of Wildlife,' 'Insects and Man,' 'Plant Eating Animals,' and 'NZ Native Birds'. Source of title - supplied title. The Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society was founded in 1923 through the efforts of Val Sanderson. It was initially called the Native Bird Protection Society. In September 2024 all access restricitons were removed from this colleciton at request of Forest and Bird.
