Description: The collection reflects the interests of a member of parliament representing a rural electorate. None of the papers relate to Gillespie's brief tenure as Minister of Agriculture. Description: Family and other personal correspondence. Includes some of William Rolleston, his wife Mary, but mainly their son Francis Joseph; also including other family members. There are some letters of political, social and community significance relating to the careers of William Rolleston, and his son F J Rolleston. Writers include Professor J B Condliffe, Sir Francis Bell, Sir James Parr. Added in 1980 to this accession were 11 letters 1891-1893 from J D Ormond, Harold Kemp, E J Watts etc; 15 letters of family to F Rolleston at school, 1881-1889; various records of F Rolleston's life at school; his `Parodies on Gilbert and Sullivan' etc. Later in same year further Rolleston letters, 1868-1949 were added, including letters relating to the political career of John Christopher Rolleston. A large part of the papers are concerned with his work as Acting Prime Minister (1906), Minister of Public Works and Marine (1893-1906), and New Zealand High Commissioner in London (1908-1912). Includes private papers and correspondence, although most of these are semi-political in nature. Also testimonials and memorabilia, photographs, published official papers and newspaper clippings. Description: Folder one consists of letters, some incomplete, written by Hamilton to his parents during the period 11 April 1844 to 25 Dec 1845. These letters describe Hamilton's experiences as private secretary to Governor FitzRoy, including comments on the fighting in the Bay of Islands, his opinions on the state of New Zealand and news of FitzRoy being recalled in late 1845. Folder two contains; a letter from Charles Clifford dated 25 Aug 1845 to Col Richmond answering questions about the treatment of flax and possible production of flax products, specifically canvas for wool bales; several letters from FitzRoy, one incomplete and undated, to Hamilton, dated 29 July 1846, 12 and 13 Sept 1847 giving news of FitzRoy's activities and comments on Hamilton's career including advice on an opening on the survey vessel the `Acheron' and a letter from Henry John Tancred to Hamilton dated 25 Sept 1871 dealing with local and national politics and economic matters and passing on news of University developments. Description: Saxton recorded both the minutiae of his daily life, such as food, crops he was growing, as well as observations on local politics, New Zealand Company affairs, negotiations between the Company, government officials and settlers and especially describes the discomforts and lowered expectations of being an immigrant. Not all persons mentioned frequently have been entered (see index for full list). Physical Description: Typescript with annotations by transcriber (36 cm; green linen) Finding Aids: Index is part of collection (qMS-1762). Provenance: The diaries were intended to be destroyed at the death of the diarist. However, they survived and Dr F A Bett, whose collection is now in the Nelson Provincial Museum, transcribed the extant diaries. There are two sets, one in the Bett Collection in Nelson, the other in the Turnbull Library. The Turnbull copy has many annotations by Dr Bett, generally with additions to the text. It is understood that parts of the diaries were in Greek and Hebrew but it is not known how much Dr Bett translated or how much of the diaries he retained.
