Description: Album of tramps, camps, and other boy scouting activities, chiefly photographed by Gerald Rainsford Craddock, who was an active scout member and later scout master during the 1930s at Otorohanga. Maori legends and hand-drawn maps accompany the photographs, bringing New Zealand geography and history alive to the young scouts. Outings include following Te Kooti's trail, searching for caves where moa bones have been found, and climbing to various trig stations in the Waikato area. Description: Journal kept by Hunter while travelling from England to New Zealand on the `Rangitata' and his return to England on the `Makura' to Australia and the Orsova' from Sydney from 23 Oct 1931 to 26 Apr 1932. He travelled with Ena Hunter. He describes their preparations, embarkation at Southampton, the other passengers, food (including menus), sea sickness, entertainments, the comforts and otherwise of the ship, his cabin, their passage through the Panama Canal and Armstice Day. They disembarked at Wellington 24 Nov 1931, and left for Australia on the `Makura' 7 Mar 1932, and for England on the `Orsova' from Sydney, 13 Mar 1932. In New Zealand Hunter spent time in Wellington, visiting the Alexander Turnbull Library, describing the work of the League of Nations Union in Wellington, visits Christchurch, the West Coast and Nelson where he spent some time, Wanganui, the Waitomo Caves, Rotorua and Auckland and back through Taranaki where he climbed Mt Egmont; he visited farms and factories, observed the opening of Parliament (24 Feb 1932) and visited the Gear Freezing and Meat Preservation Company. He attended many church services in various churches including the Congregational, Church of Christ and Presbyterian churches. Folowing his and Ena's departure for Sydney he describes the new Sydney harbour bridge, their visit to Tasmania and the House of Commons in Hobart, visiting to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Colombo, the Suez Canal, Naples and Gibraltar, and an ANZAC commemoration service he declined to attend. The journal is illustrated and includes a water colour of the `Rangitata', newspaper clippings of portraits of various New Zealanders; and a copy of a letter from the Turnbull to the donor (1986). Surveyors in the New Zealand backblocks

Description: Most of the images relate to a survey team (or teams) operating in the hill country west of the main road between Raetihi and National Park, centred in the area around Ruatiti. The two names in the album for the area are the Ruatiti Block which includes the Ruatiti Stream and the Manganuioteao River, and the Riariaki Block and trig immediatly to the north. There are images of team members, camp life (ie storing food, cutting hair, living quarters, rod fishing, and swimming), groups out on the job (ie cutting trees, making survey pegs, moving through the bush with packs and equipment, on horse back, returning from the hunt, packing in supplies, making observations, and constructing the Maungaroa trig station), and views of the native forest, and rivers. Interspersed among these photographs are others which include social occasions such as farewelling a survey team member, a motoring trip associated with a large house called "Pihautea," an amateur instrumental group, a cricket game in Nelson, and a group in Albert park Auckland. There is a farmyard with woman, hens and horses, a buggie fording the Mangaturuturu Stream, views of Island Bay, Mount and Lake Tarawera, the Makatote bridge, and the Ohakune Railway Station Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Railways album 3

Description: Publicity photographs taken by various unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. The only identifying information is a few pencilled notes giving some locations, but there are no captions identifying people. There is a large sequence showing events surrounding the first celebrations marking the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6th February 1934 attended by Lord Bledisloe. He had purchased the site, and donated money for the Treaty House renovations in 1932. The celebrations brought 10,000 Maori to Waitangi. The images show huge crowds, haka parties, various iwi performing, and parties of dignitaries including Lord and Lady Bledisloe, Joseph Gordon Coates and George William Forbes. Other scenes with Lord Bledisloe show him visiting the Waitaki Hydroelectric power station. Views of New Zealand include Government Tourist Bureau accomodation houses including those at Waitomo and the Hermitage (Mt. Cook); accomodation houses at Helensville and Parakai with interior and exterior views, and showing activities available (spa pools, games such as croquet, golf, and bowls); anglers standing by swordfish they have caught; skiing and ski lessons; and waterfalls. Industrial and agricultural views show dairy cows, citrus groves, the Kiwi Bacon Factory, printing presses, and race courses.
