Description: Album of photographs taken aboard Maunganui on following voyages: Port Chalmers to Liverpool, England. Left Port Chalmers 5 February 1919, called at Colombo (24 February 1919), Bombay (27 February - 9 March 1919), Karachi (11 March 1919), Suez and Suez Canal (20 March 1919), Port Said (21 March - 10 April 1919), Alexandria (11-15 April 1919), Gibraltar (21 April919), Southampton (25-26 April 1919), arrived Liverpool 28 April 1919. She carried 98 passengers from Bombay to Port Said; 1800 officers and men from Karachi to Port Said; 750 British soldiers and 60 passengers from Alexandria to Southampton; and 11 passengers and 7 ambulance cases from Gibraltar to Southampton. Liverpool, England, to Port Chalmers, with 1124 New Zealand soldiers. Left Liverpool 17 May 1919, called at Colon (31 May - 1 June 1919), Panama Canal and Balboa (1 June 1919), arrived Port Chalmers 23 June 1919. Includes views of Suez Canal, wharves at Colombo. Bombay, Karachi, Port Said and Alexandria, Panama Canal locks and gates, French and British warships, soldiers embarking to return home, and Peace Day celebrations in Port Chalmers and Christchurch. Description: Log book kept by Barnes while he was serving aboard HMS Minotaur, HMS Pearl and HMS Sappho. During the first voyage HMS Minotaur travelled from Portsmouth to Lisbon, Madeira and Gibraltar. During the second voyage HMS Pearl and HMS Sappho travelled from Portsmouth to Lisbon, Cape of Good Hope, Perth, New Zealand, Samoa, Fiji, Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania, Adelaide and New Hebrides. During the second voyage Barnes was aboard HMS Sappho for most of the month of August 1875. The log book contains nautical entries, facts, maps and watercolours relating to the voyages. After the October 3rd 1874 entry, there is a longer commentary on the recovery of the ship McGregor off the coast of Fiji. Description: Album of views compiled by Alexander Fisher, MD RN, during his service as a surgeon aboard HMS Endymion. The album comprises: Photographs collected during the cruise of the Flying Squadron, under the command of Rear Admiral G T Phipps Hornby, during 1869-1870, which carried HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. Included are views of Plymouth, Portsea, Madeira, Brazil (Bahia and Rio de Janiero), South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Japan, British Columbia, Hawaii and Chile. Photographs collected during a cruise in the Mediterranean during the 1870s, including views of Malta, Syria, Jerusalem, Venice, Egypt (Alexandria, Cairo, Pyramids, the Sphinx), Gibraltar and Seville Photographers represented include William Thomas Locke Travers (1819-1903), James Bragge (1833?-1908), Felice A Beato (1825-1908?). Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900), was captain of HMS Galatea and commander of the Flying Squadron, which visited New Zealand in 1869 and 1870.
