Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1915 and 1916. Many of the images show various aspects of logging in Piha and Karekare. Views include the Piha Tramway, bush railway inclines, scenes of lumbermen cutting down kauri trees and cross-cutting felled trees, transportation of logs by bullock teams and horse-drawn rail wagons, the Piha timber camp and mill and men at everyday activities in camp buildings and in their workmen's huts. Description: David Jones born Wanganui, 1914. Outlines family background - maternal grandparents from County Cork, Ireland - mother born in Greymouth - Uncle Jack became Mayor of Greymouth. Talks about the West Coasters. Recalls the Chinese gold miners and the differences in their work conditions from the other miners. Describes growing up in Wanganui; family house in Keith Street; Masonic Lodge; father's fear of fire as a result of the great Raetihi bush fire in 1918. Recalls going to work in an electroplater's shop and at the age of 15 `doing a man's work for a slave wage'. Talks about the lack of a trade union covering electroplaters in Wanganui and the subsequent working conditions. Explains electroplating process. Moved to Wellington and recalls decent pay and work conditions and his first union meeting at the age of 22 when he requested that the Wanganui and Palmerston North area be covered by the engineers union which did eventuate. Explains that conditions had improved on moving back to his former job. Other recollections include: fishing; native school, Putiki; Maori canoes on the river; cherry trees planted by Mother Mary Aubert; influenza epidemic 1918; end of World War I celebrations; 1920s earthquake; big flood in 1926 and Foster's Hotel fire. Recalls declaration of World War II and joining Expeditionary Force, travelling in `The New Amsterdam' to Sydney, then to Singapore where they transferred to the `Aquatania' bound for Egypt. Was part of the 4th anti-aircraft regiment. Has vivid recall of events, relating many stories and mapping his movements during the war and comradeship. Talks about the dreadful living conditions during the war and gives his opinions on war. Mentions Battle of Alamein. Moved from the deserts to Bari, Italy and relates stories from the Sangro River. Talks about the fall of Cassino and experiences in Italy. Talks about life after the war and his research into rammed-earth building, using that method to build his own house which he describes. Talks about his book on the subject of rammed earth building that is being published at present. Recounts his involvement with RSA and Vietnam issues - was totally opposed to the Vietnam war. Gives reasons for living so long in Wanganui and the changes he has seen in the town. Recounts his involvement with the Four Seasons Theatre. Description: John (Jack) Frederick Fox born Dunedin 1922. Mentions details of parent's birthplace, their marriage and mother's early death when he was aged three years. Remembers 1929 as a bad year, with floods in Dunedin, unemployment because of Depression, soup kitchens in Cargill Street and Hillside Road and riots in Dunedin when Wardell's windows were broken. Describes Forbury corner, with reference to New Zealand Vesta Company. Recalls father was a lay preacher at Cargill Road Methodist Church and home life being based around church. Outlines working career, commencing as a message boy with New Zealand Typewriter Company in 1937, moving to Post and Telegraphs as a telegram delivery boy in 1939 and World War II service. Recounts own part in the Stanley Graham manhunt on the West coast as part of the army signals group sent to Koiterangi. Discusses the effect that the entry of Japan into the war in December 1941 had on training and describes posting to Ashburton as a result. Talks about transfer to the Air Force, preparation for service in the Pacific and working in the signal office in Suva. Refers to the arrival of Australian RAF Lancaster which now graces the Canberra War Museum. Speaks of working in the United States Navy communications station in Espirito Santos in the New Hebrides. Recalls returning to Dunedin after Peace was declared, travelling by train and being `packed like sardines'. Recounts return to work as a post man, marriage in 1949 and move to Concord where, with the help of a rehabilitation loan, purchased a section in the Burnside area. Recalls becoming interested in the Green Island Community and was involved in the setting up of the Concord Improvement Society. Mentions Jim Crawford who was responsible for shifting stock from holding paddocks to the Burnside Freezing works. Describes problems caused by occasional stock stampedes in the growing residential area of Concord and explains how the problem was resolved.
