Description: A panoramic view of New Plymouth viewed from the sea, with Gannet and Albatross Islands on the right, the Wai Tera (Waitara) 'originally fixed on for the New Plymouth Settlement", the 'present site of New Plymouth' (before any houses were built) - all on the left side of the panorama. On the right are Mount Egmont, 'Barrett's [Accommodation] Houses and Hotel', 'Native Pah' and the Sugar Loaf Islands 'The islands on which Barrett defeated 5000 natives' In 'Information relating to New Plymouth (London, Smith Elder, 1841). p. 9-10, under 'Climate and soil' 'Mr G. Duppa states:- 'Amongst other sketches, I have sent you a panoramic view of the Sugar Loaves, Mount Egmont, and the Taranaki district generally, which I made when I went down there in the Brougham, with the Plymouth Company's surveyors. It will give you a better idea of the country than any verbal description I could give, beyond a few observations. The land for about three miles inland is slightly undulating, but not so steep but that a plough would go over the whole of it ... It is for the most part covered with fern and brushwood (which fire levels with the ground) for several miles inland, when you first meet with groves of timber, present a most park-like aspect ...' Description: A whare and trees in the left foreground, a canoe being rowed by three men on the lake in the centre and the White Terraces in the background, with clouds of steam above them. Probably one of the earliest depictions of the Terraces On the verso is a poem in the artist's hand, to his wife, Rangi Kawau (Rangi Koa), with marginal notes on the Maori words, in the hand of Edward Shortland. Inscriptions: Mount recto - beneath image - Title in ink in the artist's hand Compare two other version of this drawing by Merrett. One dating from 1842 is in the British Library's Grey Albums (Add. Ms 19953 f. 99, pl. 268) an ink and pencil drawing entitled 'Rotomahana, one of the Rotorua Lakes with a view of the hot springs and the ascent to it by natural steps of salyx'; also the Turnbull Library's A-089-008, an ink and wash sketch, almost identical to this one. Description: Includes photographs of Maori artefacts in museum context. Possibly created by James Edge-Partington, an anthropologist who studied artefacts in New Zealand and the Pacific. This volume is in the same style of album, with similar photographs and articles as Webster album 4 (PA1-o-519) which has Edge-Partington's named bookplate inside the front cover. Studies of a variety of artefacts including an instrument giving a decoy call for kiwi; a sea leopard's tooth carved and worn as a pendant (from Stewart Island); whale teeth pendants; weapons; tools; carved waka, prows of waka; carved meeting houses; Te Kooti's house "Te Waho"; carved storehouses; a Maori kite; eel traps and fish hooks. The artefacts are from various collections in New Zealand and overseas, including the Chapman Collection, the Hamilton Collection, the Hocken Collection and General Robley's Collection. Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of New Zealand made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. Many of the images are of military inspections and displays by school children. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. Also included are four scenic photographs by the New Zealand Tourist Department which may have been taken in 1903. The photographer for the tour photographs was Guy. Description: The images record three separate events: 1. Leslie Verry's trip to Europe in 1939 as the world prepared for war. 2. The New Zealand Centennial celebrations at Waitangi in 1940. 3. A climbing trip to Tongariro National Park, easter, 1940. In relation to the Second World War, this album is interesting in that it has several photographs showing mobilisation in Holland, and troops on the move in Utrecht and the Hague following the Italian invasion of Albania in April 1939. It also has photographs taken in Kassa (Hungary) after the partition of Czechoslovakia.
