Description: A pocket inside the front cover of this album contains 23 loose photographs of landscapes in New Zealand, many of them Government Publicity Photos. In the South Island various views show Milford and the Milford Track, Tasman Glacier, Mount Cook, and the Buller Gorge. In the North Island there are several views of a group of fallow deer near Featherston; two of geysers at Whakarewarewa; and two of caves in the Waitomo Cave system, showing the underground river in the Aranui Cave, and stalactites in the Ruakuri cave. The main body of the album contains older photographs, circa 1890s, of townscapes in the Wairarapa. Two scenes show groups of Maori performers, one of a posed group of men and women, some holding taiaha and mere; the other of a group of young girls dancing on a podium. Description: Maori place names and old historical sites of Horowhenua (Vol. 1, images 1-146). Album includes maps, diagrams & sketches, and black & white photographs. Views include Paremata Redoubt, Lake Horowhenua, carved pātaka at Papaitonga Pā. Views of Komokorau, the burial place of Mua-Upoko chiefs including Chief Mahuera Paki Tanguru-o-te-rangi; Lake Wai-tawa and Te Moutere (formerly a fortified island pā). Place names & historic features of Kapiti Island, including relics of whaling days at Wharekohu Bay showing ruins of stone house, stone walls and a stone-embanked stream channel, burial caves, Waiorua Valley showing the approximate site of Te Rauparaha's principal pā, and Motungārara Island where there was a subsidiary pā of Te Rauparaha. Ōtaki, Rangiātea Church (1925); carved whare at Puke-Karaka; Ōtaki Jubilee Pole; and old meeting house Uawhaki at Waikawa. The site of the old Māori flour-mill on the Waitarere Stream at Poroutawhao, which was built in 1853 or 1854 under the direction of a French priest. Several images of performers competing in the haka and poi competitions at Shannon, 2 January 1928. Images of Pākehā pioneers of Horowhenua (Hector McDonald and his wife Agnes (nee Carmont)), and a photograph of Rora Hakaraia, daughter of Mua-Upoko chief Tanguru, and sister of Te Rangihiwinui (also known as Taitoko, and later as Te Keepa or Major Kemp). Description: Photographs of the New Plymouth district, including coastal scenes, Mount Egmont, the New Plymouth wharves. Views of Parihaka include group portraits of Maori, and several of Pakeha people amongst the Maori. One shows a large party of Europeans (men and women) about which a slip is inserted into an envelope at the beginning of the album. The note lists a number of them, and states "This party of Europeans at Parihaka may have been when Major Parris was invited to visit Te Whiti one New Year - & to bring a party of friends" (signed R Allan). Names include F. Cornwall, H. Stoeker, [?] Ward, Miss Cornwall, Mrs D.K. Morrison, W.C. Weston, Mrs Sladden, Miss McKellar, Mrs Robertson, Mrs L.D. Webster, and Miss A. Hursthouse. The slip also notes "11 of the Europeans appear to have white feathers in their hats". An envelope inserted in the album identifies two young women with bicycles as Flo Avery (later Mrs Sydney Cottier), and Adele Avery (later Mrs Lou Webster), two of John Avery's daughters, who had the first bicycles in New Plymouth Quantity: 1 album(s).
