Description: Shows a view along the Wellington shoreline, looking north. Part of Barrett's Hotel is shown on the extreme left, beside a classical revival building. There are shops in the distance. A red-coated soldier leans against the door to Barrett's Hotel. A small rowboat is in the sea to the right of the road Title on engraved plate on frame. Artist attributed because of similarity of subject to Holmes' "Wellington Beach 1856" (A-032-040). The work is not as finished as that one however. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Looking along The Strand, Tauranga, from Monmouth redoubt. Photograph taken between 1873 and 1877 by Herbert Deveril. Includes the Town Wharf. The two storied building is the Tauranga Hotel. To the right of the hotel are the Bank of New Zealand and the Tauranga Store. Brain's boatbuilding yard is in the bottom left hand corner. The Native Hostelry is at bottom right, the long building with a verandah. To the right of the hotel are the Bank of New Zealand and the Tauranga Store. Other - Other prints of this image are at PA7-45-27 and PA7-45-29. Source of descriptive information - Dated between 1873 and 1877 due to the following: The photographer Deveril arrived in New Zealand in 1873, and the Victoria Wharf, not pictured, was built in 1877 (see Neil G Hanson, History of Tauranga harbour & port ([Tauranga, N.Z. : Port of Tauranga Ltd.], 1997) p 14. Buildings identified by Library client. Description: View along Invercargill's main street showing a number of houses and businesses. The earliest known view of Invercargill Between 1969, the time of acquisition by the Library, and 2010, attributed to W B D Mantell, based on handwriting, style of drawing and the fact that Mantell worked with Douglas, and was involved in the early settlement of Invercargill. However Mantell was in England in 1858, the date of this drawing. The drawing was earlier owned by Gerhard Mueller, who arrived in New Zealand in 1859, the year after this drawing was made. The `Pearson' whose house is drawn is W H Pearson, Commissioner of Lands, 1857-1884. `Grief' the butcher was J M Grieve. The Albion Hotel was also known as Linds Accommodation House. Other Titles - Douglas, Charles Edward Inscriptions: Recto - bottom centre - title in pen and ink. Along top, identifications of buildings include Whites store, Collins store, Collins Goods, Grief Butcher, Pearsons House, Butchershop, Royal Hotel.
