Description: Programme booklet for a dance recital contains photographs of King Albert in military uniform, and a group of (probably Belgian) children standing in fur coats. The programme lists tableaux and dances. Tableaux include "Belgium" (Mona Mackay), "The Allies" (with women representing England (Miss M Miller), France (Miss Woodham), Russia (Miss Lewis), Servia (Miss E Miller), Japan (Miss Hipkins), and Belgium (Miss Mona Mackay). The dance pupils are all listed with the items they performed. Other variety perfomers were Mr J W Ryan, Mr Alan McElwain, Mr F G Bourke. The programme contains advertisements for many Auckland businesses. There is also a cartoon "Bravo! Description: Dismissed carpenters march along Queen Street, Auckland, 22 February 1949, protesting at the result of a dispute with the Auckland Master Builders' Association that left them unemployed. Photographer unidentified. Original caption from the New Zealand Free Lance, March 2. 1949, page 25 reads: Auckland Carpenters' Protest. After a meeting in the Town Hall, Auckland, which about 1,200 carpenters attended to hear speakers trace the history of the dispute with the Auckland Master Builders' Association, about 700 dismissed carpenters marched down Queen Street and up to Albert Park. Description: View from above Grafton Gully, covered in dense bush, with fenced hills and Governor Hobson's grave in the cemetery to the left. Government House is left of centre in the middle distance and three other houses overlooking Grafton Gully are somewhat closer on the right, one of them the home of William Connell, the first Postmaster-General and his wife Isabella. In the distance across the water, the flagstaff marks Mount Victoria, with Rangitoto beyond that. The flat island further off, left of centre is Tiritiri. Painted in early 1843, before the artist moved to an appointment at Russell. A fence has been raised around Governor Hobson's grave. The funeral had taken place in November 1842. Description: Overlooking the house of Alexander Richardson Watson in Devonport, Auckland, circa 1900. Photographer unidentified. Source of descriptive information - Biographical information about A R Watson, and about the house in this photograph supplied by Doug Bolitho in August 2008. This house was built ca 1879 for Mr W L Rees, and bought by A R Watson in 1882. Watson did extensive work to the grounds, leveling, terracing and planting. Watson died in 1911 and his estate including this house was inherited by his son, Alexander Richardson Dickie Watson, who died in 1917, leaving no natural family. After the First world War the house was used as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers, and in 1934 was partly destroyed by fire. It was demolished in about 1936. (Information from Watson's great great nephew, Doug Bolitho, August 2008. Watson's obituary can be found in the New Zealand Herald for 30 October 1911.) Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s). Description: Shows blockhouse in distance atop a small hill. In the foreground, in front of small cliffs on the shoreline, is a stretch of water, a canoe, and three figures, possibly spear fishing. The title includes "Manukau Hrbour". The Whau River arises north of the Manukau Harbour, and flows into the Waitemata Harbour at Avondale. Nevertheless this view could have been taken from Manukau Harbour looking north to a blockhouse built near the source of the Whau, rather than at its mouth on the Waitemata. The performance was to be attended by the Marquis of Normanby and his wife, and performers included Mr Charles Keeley (comedian) and Mr Alfred Statham (composer and pianiste). Seventeen items, including bell-ringing and comic songs, were followed by the "laughable farce" "The haunted chateau!", with the main parts being taken by Harry Lynch and Charles Keeley. The vertical borders named the places at which the family had performed: Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Fiji, Java, Queensland, New Zealand, Western Australia, California, "etc".
