Description: Scene inside a pa, with soldiers on guard and seated on the ground, a white horse pulling a cart to the left. The watercolour is a likely to be a copy of a watercolour by Colonel Edward Arthur Williams and is almost the same, apart from the placement of the soldiers, as a watercolour by Williams in the Turnbull Library entitled Picket at Nukumaru, 30 Jan.y 65. Description: Shows the camp on the north bank of the river, with cows in foreground, and two soldiers, one apparently sketching, perhaps a self-portrait. The masts of three ships can be seen in the port area and there are futher military tents on the south bank of the river. Supplied title Attribution based on style and information from donor The camp was close to the earlier site of Waimate Pa, which was located at the top of the same bluff - compare two drawings by Charles Heaphy from 1839 - 'Waimate Pa, 1839' (A-164-008) and 'View on the Patea River, Cooks Straits' (A-146-004); also '[Album of an officer]. Description: Soldiers within an earthen rampart, with two standing guard, gazing out across a plain towards low hills. Within the shelter of the rampart are several tents, two with soldiers reclining inside them, one with a standing soldier leaning against it, and another seated soldier in front of it, smoking a pipe. Three rifles are stacked upright together in the centre. Probably a South Taranaki scene, the drawings are mounted in the album in chronolical order and those immediately before and after are of Taranaki Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows two small hills in near distance, the left one topped with walls enclosing tents, and the right one with fence and roofed building. There is a group of tents between the hills on the flat. Extended Title - From: Warre, Henry. [Sketchbook ] 1864-1865. Inscriptions: Recto - top right - 1; Recto - bottom left - Mahohitahi Oct. 10th 1864 Mahoetahi is near Waitara. Troops were brought into Waitara on 8 March 1860, and Taranaki war began on 17 March. Description: The curved bridge over Henui Stream, New Plymouth, with an armed soldier approaching by the road on the right, and another figure driving a carriage led by a pair of bullocks approaching on the left. Two buildings are on the skyline to the left. Copied by Hamley from a watercolour by his superior officer, E. A. Williams. Compare Williams' 'Henui Bridge [June 1865], (A-210-005), which is almost identical, except that Williams shows soldiers crossing the bridge, and no figure with bullocks. The buildings on the skyline are also somewhat different. The Williams watercolour has been dated to June 1865 by historian R. I. M. Description: Looking inland towards a range of hills and mountains, including Mount Taranaki at some distance, with a small unoccupied canoe and a dinghy with a sail carrying three people from one bank to the other. Two more small boats further up the river, and, in the distance, a house and a row of cabbage trees. Likely to be a river in South Taranaki, or North of Wanganui, although not as far north as the Patea River, given the small size of Mount Taranaki in the distance. Possibly the Waitotara River.
