Description: An extensive view of the Wairarapa Plain with Wairarapa Lake on the left, Rimutaka Range and Tararua Ranges in the background. A boar hunt is underway in the foreground, with one Maori man and a dog to the right. The Maori man is dressed in traditional costume, and appears to be carrying a rope. Bracken and ferns in the foreground and clumps of bush on the plain. The accompanying text reads: This district lies about fifty miles from Wellington by the nearest road. Mr Charles Kettle, one of the Company's Assistant-Surveyors, ascended the Manawatu River, which flows along the other side of the Tararua Mountains, and entered this plain by rounding the low spurs at the extreme right of the view. The forest consists of the largest trees. The open tracts are covered with grass, feern and tutu bushes. Wild hogs abound in this plain. The Ruamahanga flows through the midst of it, and passes through Lake Wairarapa into Palliser Bay. The plain of the Ruamahanga is about sixty miles in length, with an average breadth of twelve miles. There is one small native village at its northern extremity, and another on the beach at Palliser Bay, as well as a whaling station supplied from Wellington. Lake Wairarapa is ten miles long, and from two to three miles broad. Between the lake and the sea several settlers from Wellington have recently squatted with large herds of cattle, which they drove along the sea-coast. Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Head and shoulders profile portrait of Te Rangihaeata, a peacock feather in his top-knot, an albatross feather ear adornment and a fine flax cloak. One of a series of portraits of at least twenty Maori men and women done by Nelson artist Isaac Coates. Rangihaeata & Rauparaha, with their wives and whanau, visited Nelson in March 1843, the likely date of this portrait. The artist made various watercolour copies of this portrait, but this appears to be an earlier version than the one held in the Library's collection at A-286-014 and the one in the Peabody Museum, Salem, Massachussets. There is a (probably) still earlier version in the Bett Collection, Nelson Provincial Museum. Other Titles - Rangihaeata Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows full-face head and shoulders portrait of a Maori chief with moko, short curly hair, a turkey feather over his right ear, ear ornaments and a feather cloak. The chief's name was Te Uri Kanae Attribution based on the fact that an engraving was made of this work in 1824, and Lewin is acknowledged as artist ("Lewin del."). A copy of the engraving is held at A-092-002 According to Ellis' "Early prints of New Zealand" (Christchurch, 1978), A Hoodee O Gunna [Turi a Kuna] was a signatory to the first sale of land in New Zealand, to the Church Missionary Society in February 1815. Dating has been made on the basis of this. The subject is a chief of Rangihoua and nephew of Te Pahi. Lewin is said to have made his sketch of this subject in Sydney; there is no evidence for Lewin having visited New Zealand. Other Titles - Te Uri o Kanae Turi a Kuna Rangihoua Inscriptions: None. Behind the whare is a palisade and to the far right a waka is being launched into the sea. This work has also been know as 'Meeting house and stockade' A third foreground figure has been pencilled in beside the couple at the left, but has not been completed.
