Description: Shows a view along the Wellington shoreline, looking north. Part of Barrett's Hotel is shown on the extreme left, beside a classical revival building. There are shops in the distance. A red-coated soldier leans against the door to Barrett's Hotel. A small rowboat is in the sea to the right of the road Title on engraved plate on frame. Artist attributed because of similarity of subject to Holmes' "Wellington Beach 1856" (A-032-040). The work is not as finished as that one however. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows the foreshore at Paihia with three canoes at the water's edge, and the houses, huts and gardens of the Church Missionary Society station back from the beach. A flag, probably the Union Jack, is flying from one of the hills behind the houses. Published as a wood engraving in the Church Missionary quarterly papers, no. 79, Michaelmas, 1835, frontispiece, with title Mission station, Paihia, New Zealand.. Description: View from the south end of Oriental Bay looking north toward Wellington, showing rowing boat, boat-sheds, cows in field, houses, Oriental Parade and Oriental Terrace The large red house on the hill, upper left, was known as 'Thomas's Folly' and was built of Australian hardwood by Sir Godfrey John Thomas, half-brother to Sir George Grey, then later owned by Alfred Maurice Lewis of Thompson Lewis. The wood used for this house was said to have been left over from the Government Buildings in Lambton Quay. The large white house, also on the left, but lower, in Wilkinson Street (leading to Grass Street), was first owned by a Mr Wilkinson. The single-storey house on the corner of Hay Street was owned by a Mr Laurence Arcus. Painting has been trimmed. Description: A view along a beach (now Thorndon Quay) looking towards Kaiwharawhara and Wadestown, with the road to to Wadestown shown winding up the hill in the background. There are houses at the beachfront on the left, mostly at the top of the low hill above the beach. Major Baker's house appears as a roof only, with a tree in front of it. A couple on horseback is in the foreground and a Maori man, woman and child stand at the left. The Library holds a photographic copy of the privately-owned watercolour original for this engraving, painted between 1842 and 1845 (negative 138581 1/2). The watercolour has no Maori group on the left but is otherwise very similar to the engraving Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Looking west from Worser Bay towards the harbour, Somes Island and the western hills. The pilot station, three other houses and a boat shed are on the left, close to the beach. A bather wearing a long-legged costume is emerging from the sea onto the rocky beach in the foreground Dated 1870s because of the small number of buildings present in the area, and the lack of a road over the hill towards the end.
