Evans, Malcolm Paul, 1945- :[Air NZ tattoo]. 30 May 2013

Date: 2013

From: Evans, Malcolm Paul, 1945- :Digital cartoons

Reference: DCDL-0025084

Description: Shows a group of passengers on an Air New Zealand airplane. They look out the window, see the airline's koru logo on the wing, and recoil in fear. At the bottom, a small figure says, 'Tame Iti would make a good hostie." Refers to Tame Iti, a high profile Tuhoe Maori activist with a full facial moko, as well as recent controversy over Air New Zealand's policy of not hiring individuals with ta moko or visible tattoos as part of their air host crew or customer service staff, after a potential applicant was turned away during her interview. The company has stated that the policy is in place to make international customers, who may be from cultures where tattoos are not commonplace, comfortable. In recent years, there has been a resurgence in the practice of ta moko as a sign of cultural identity and a reflection of the general revival of Maori language and culture in New Zealand. (3 News, 27 May 2013) Colour and black and white versions available Quantity: 2 digital cartoon(s).
