Date: 1882

By: Wyvill, Edward Christopher (Rev), -1889

Reference: G-048

The foreground shows a railway track entering the picture in the extreme left foreground and proceeding out of sight through a cutting at the centre right. At the left is a small stream running at the base of a bank or low cliff face. The small hill at the far left shows a few leafless trees, probably the vestiges of vegetation left after land clearing. There may be some question about the identity of the artist. Rev Edward Christopher Wyvill is known to have been in New Zealand in the late 1850s and 1860s. The "Return of the Freeholders of New Zealand" of 1882 lists an Edward Charles Wyvill at Picton; this may have been a son. By: Hawke's Bay Art Gallery and Museum

Reference: A-113-009

Description: A road in the left foreground, probably Ohiro Road, with bush, open fields and scattered houses on a sloping area, with dense housing and businesses on the flat shore area in the distance. The road running across the centre of the view into the housing on the left is probably Willis Street. The view looks north across the harbour towards the Hutt Valley. Several sailing ships and smaller boats are in the harbour. By same hand as A-113-010 [River flat and homestead, ca 1860] Originally catalogued as by an artist with surname Capot, on the grounds that a series of squiggles on the right side of the road in the left foreground could read "Capot" when turned upside-down. However, the marks are more likely to be intended to represent pebbles on the road. Other Titles - Capot [?] [Wellington from the Brooklyn Hills, ca 1860] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
