The minister replies that they are showing restraint by not asking for double that. The Remuneration Authority decided on a 1.4 per cent rise backdated to July and a one-off payment of $2000 to cover the decreased use of MPs' travel subsidy. The rise boosts Mr Key's salary to $400,500 and a backbencher's to $134,800. The authority also signalled a further lump-sum payment was likely in the new year after the travel perk was scrapped. Description: Shows the Hon John Edward Jenkinson Christchurch Legislative Council 119892-1914 John Edward Jenkinson was born in Dunedin and educated at State schools. He served his time to boilermaking in a Dunedin foundry and shipbuilding yard. In 1882 he joined the first labour union - the Dunedin Boilermakers, by which he was elected President (1883) and deputed to form unions in other cities. He was one of the committee of three appointed to draw up rules for the Canterbury Trades Council and for the railway servants' union. He was called to the Legislative Council in 1892 (one of a number appointed to create a government majority) and was a member till 1914. On retiring (1914) he contested the Clutha seat in the House of Representatives. Was President for some years of the Early Settlers' Association. Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).

Description: Shows Ronald Algie depicted on a mock diploma which has been awarded him 'to certify that having completed my course of P.P., D.D.T. and T.N.T. and having survived one session of parliamentary strife is hereby passed fit for public life'. In the first National government after its election in 1949 he was Minister of Education - hence this certificate which has a motto 'To be as hard as an Education Board'. The diploma has a rosette drawn at the bottom right which is signed 'S.W.A.L.K.' (signed with a loving kiss'. Pencilled text below the cartoon reads 'Warrent of fitness'. The cartoon was triggered by a newspaper article reproduced on the left, (n.b. only a torn scrap of the article remains glued to the original) headed 'Public life is no place for the supersensitive' and continues with quotes from Algie acknowledging the amount of verbal sparring that occurs in Parliament.
