A Tararua thunder cloud

Description: Great cumulo-nimbus cloud formation that appeared over Tararua Range at 3pm. Upper level of cloud was probably 11,000 ft or 12,000 ft. Rolling northwards it broke over Tokomaru and Palmerston North as an exceptionally severe thunderstorm with heavy rain and hail. The above view was taken from Ohau and shows Mount Wiopehu. All except numbers 2,3,4 & 5 are from the vicinity of Waikiekie and Roha-a-te-kawau island-pa. No 1: Model canoe; length 3 ft 4.5 inches; note holes along gunwale for lashing on topsides (rauawa). No 2: Kaheru with 3 pairs of holes for repairing break; lenth 15 inches; from Mangaroa Nos 3 & 4: Kaheru (scoops - broken) from Mangaroa No 5: Comb No 6: Wooden implement of unknown use; length 19.375 inches Nos 7 & 8: Pumice bowls - cinder carriers; diamters 3.875 & 2.5 inches x 3 inches; groove across under-surface for carrying-cord No 9: Wooden bowl for same use - a tawa knot or nodule; diameter 2.125 x 2.375 inches; depth of hollow, 1 inch. Description: Three types of stone adze, in the possession of Mr R A Prouse, Levin. Specimen on left: splay, broad-edged shape, from Turakina. Length 4 inches, breadth 2.75 inches, cutting edge 2.75 inches, breadth of butt 1.75 to 2 inches, thickness 1 inch, colour black with faint mottlings. Specimen in centre: from Mr J Hill's run, Hokio Beach Road, Levin. Rudely chipped except close to cutting edge; triangular cross-section; length 5.75 inches, breadth 2 inches, cutting edge 2 inches, thickness 1.25 inches; of black, cherty, fine-grained greywacke or indurated argillite. Specimen on right: from R A Prouse's garden, Makomako Road East, Weraroa. Fine cutting edge and well-ground bevels meeting at a rather obtuse angle; cutting edge narrows in; length 6.375 inches, breadth 1.625, cutting edge 1.125 inches, butt 2.25 inches long & breadth from 1 to 1.25 inches, thickness 1.75 inches; of light green chertose rock with patches of black carbonaceous argillite (almost certainly from Tararua range). Description: Eight (8) maps drawn on base diazo maps of Kapiti Coast and Horowhenua townships, showing electricity reticulation information. Some maps contain two maps, as noted. The maps are: 1 - Tokomaru Township reticulation; 2 - Manawatu Foxton Heads reticulation; 4 - Ōhau Township reticulation [and] Manakau reticulation; 5 - Waimeha Township reticulation [and] Waikanae Township; 6 - Paraparaumu Beach [and] Tasman Beach Ōtaki. 7 - Paraparaumu Township reticulation; [8 & 9] - Raumati Beach S.D. [and] Renown and Kawatiri beaches with extensions, reticulation (on same sheet); 10 - Paekākāriki Township. Each map has annotated information drawn on a diazo print that shows township layouts with numbered sections and roads. Maps have annotated drawings showing reticulation work being linked up between the road and the individual sections. Many of the sections include an annotated owner's name, a number, or both. Several of the maps list the owner's names and associated section numbers alongside the map. The bound maps cover acts as a title page, and lists ten named maps, numbered 1-10. Note map no. 3 Waitarere & Hokio Beaches, is missing. Map no. 8 and 9 (Raumati Beach A & B and Renown & Kawatiri Beaches) are on the same (unnumbered) map.
