Description: Waimate North Mission Station seen from the front, with its flag inscribed Rongopai flying in the foreground and several outbuildings, including a dovecot to the right. The beginnings of a circular garden with two small small bushes and a surrounding drive can be seen in the foreground. The building has dormer windows in the roof and verandah posts. A copy of the engraving after Samuel Williams' 'The missionary house, Waimate' in William Yate's Account of New Zealand (London, Seeley and Burnside, 1835) p. 197 Title from mount Another view of the same house by Richard Taylor, drawn between 1839 and 1843, (NON-ATL-0131) shows much more development in the garden, including climbing plants, possibly roses, growing up onto the roof of the house, a fenced-in verandah, a garden developed in front of the verandah, and a much more developed central circular garden bed in the foreground The artist, Gardiner, is known to have copied other views of both New Zealand and Tasmania, published between 1835 and 1856. None of his work is signed, and the source of his name is unknown, although it may have come from the owner of his work in the 1950s, Captain A W F Fuller. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Probably part of the well developed garden established by Utauta and Hona Webber on their property at Waiorua, Kapiti Island. Utauta Webber (nee Parata) was the last surviving child of Wi Parata Te Kakakura Waipunaahau to live on Kapiti Island. Her father was one of the largest land owners on Kapiti. Utauta and her husband Hona farmed Waiorua-Kapiti until the late 1940s or early 50s when they retired to Paraparaumu. Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).

Description: A detailed view of the houses and streets in the town from a high viewpoint, (the hill behind St Mary's Church) looking out to the west towards the sea. St Mary's Church and the churchyard are in the left foreground. The names of several house-owners are given, along with details of other features, including the houses of [William] Lakeman, Dorset, [Richard] Brown, "G. Inn" [Government Inn?] New Zealand Company houses [i.e. the immigration barracks], the gaol, Kawau Pa on the right, near the sea, a store (or stone?) house, the mill [Huatoki] stream, grass, streets, the bridge and gardens. The position of the South Huatoki Reef is also given, just out to sea, in line with the corner of the pa on the right. Brougham Street runs down the centre of the view, diagonally from the right bottom corner, with Vivian Street branching off to the right. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: A lawn in front, with croquet hoops, inset garden and winding paths on both sides, leading to the house, with an outbuilding on the right and trees on both sides. A woman is moving along the path on the right and another on the path on the left. Henry Williams moved into this house in 1830. There is a drawing of the house by him in Auckland Institute and Museum, location PD 52 (2). The Library has a photograph of the drawing under Williams, Henry. House at Paihia ... 1830. Possibly the work of T B Hutton, Williams' son-in-law. He visited Paihia about 1858-1860. The style appears similar to his work. Other Titles - Archdeacon Henry Williams' house. Thomas Biddulph Hutton, 1859 1860 Inscriptions: Recto - Old mission house at Paihia. Archdeacon Henry Williams' house later mostly demolished by Rev. Burrows. Re Mrs Colenso making mortar from observing Bp Williams making it for building stone building close to this house (lathe & plaster) which was the 1st stone house built in N.Z. - Burnt down & ruins now stand. Description: Map of Porirua Harbour, Paramata, Plimmerton and Pukerua districts with Mana Island. Location of several pa sites indicated: Wairaka Pa near Pukerua Bay; Taupo Pa (built 1844) at Plimmerton, Warakoua Pa on Porirua Harbour's North shore, and a pa at Titahi Bay. Also shows location of Jackson's Hotel, Thom's hotel and whaling station, Maori gardens beyond Taupo pa and Maori path to Pukerua Bay. Subdivisions of land are indicated around Porirua Harbour. Attributed to Charles Heaphy until 1993, because sketches referred to in title were thought to be Heaphy's. Reattribution to Brees because 1. Brees was Principal surveyor for the N.Z.Company and the map shows land subdivisions. 2. Handwriting very similar to Brees' on MS map held by the Admiralty (photo held by Cartographic Collection (823 at / 1844-5 / acc 855) 3. Indications of points of view of sketches can mostly be linked with known originals by Brees. The following list gives the numbers on this map followed by titles and plate numbers of the matching illustration from Brees' Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847). No.21 [i.e. no. 1 or 2?] = Porirua Harbour no. 35, described as looking towards the north from near Jackson's towards Thom's. No.3. Thom's whaling station, Porerua, no.14. No.4. Porerua Harbour no. 29; also Porirua Harbour, ATL's watercolour (B-031-006), looking south towards Thom's and Paramata Pa. No.5. Paramata Pa, Porerua, no.52. No.6 Porerua Bay, no.12.
