Description: Japanese sailors being rowed to their ship, the Ibuki, on Wellington Harbour. The warships Ibuki (three funnels) and Minotaur (four funnels), can be seen in the background. Photographed by an unknown phototgrapher in October 1914. The warships were escortes for the New Zealand expeditionary force. The Ibuki would have travelled with the convoy though the Pacific, as under the Japanese-British naval treaty of 1902-1922, the Japanese agreed to support British interests in the Pacific. Description: Right-hand third of full panorama from Thorndon to Te Aro. Main features named. Shows Maori group sitting near flagpole at left, smoking long pipes, other Maori figures and three thatched buildings on the foreshore. On centre foreshore is Messrs Ridgways and Co's wharf and stores. At right is Willis Street with the Southern Cross Hotel and further back the Ship Hotel. Description: Shows a general view of Wellington Harbour, probably from the position of the Bolton Street Cemetery. There are several dwellings in the foreground, a flagpole on the foreshore at the left, near a wharf which juts out into the harbour. The flagpole probably marks the site of Government House. On the foreshore at centre right, is a building with a square turret, with a pointed roof, probably on Lambton Quay The house roof in the left near section adjacent to bushes and trees may be those of the house of Robert Park. His house was adjacent to and below the Bolton Street Cemetery Inscriptions: Mat recto - beneath image - [Title]; (On edge of frame now discarded) - suggested date of around 1868. Description: The steam and sail ship Wellington entering Wellington Heads with Pencarrow in the background. The Red Ensign is flying at the stern and sailors can be seen on deck "Painted by ex-fiance of Anne E Barber. Artist, a Swedish officer was drowned at sea'. This information came with the painting when it was acquired by the Library. However the style is strongly reminiscent of that of William Forster, who died of diphtheria in Sydney. Description: Left one-third of full panorama from Thorndon to Te Aro. Main features named. Shows houses along foreshore of Lambton Quay and Thorndon. Shows Tinakore [sic] Range, Kai Wara Wara [sic], Nga Hauranga [sic], the Terrace, Willis & Co.'s store, Kumu Toto Point and Pa, Doctor Evan's house, Colonel Wakefield's house, Barrett's hotel, Medical hall, Company's Emigration Barracks, and Government flagstaff. Immigration Barracks were established in 1840 to shelter the early immigrants from Britain on first arrival. They were on Thorndon Flat, on the site of modern Hobson Street, close to where it crosses the motorway. Early drawings suggest they comprised a group of 8 barracks enclosed by a fence. Description: A page showing one half of Plate I from Edward Jerningham Wakefield,'s 'Illustrations to “Adventure in New Zealand”' (London: Smith, Elder and Company, 1845), titled 'The Two Head Chiefs of Port Nicholson'. Page is captioned. Image depicts Honiana Te Puni-kokopu (also known as Epuni or Te Puni) standing, with full facial moko, clad in a dogskin cloak and holding a taiaha in his right hand. Behind him is Wellington Harbour with two Māori people by the shore to the left, and Petone Pā whare and pataka, a waka on the shore, and a flagpole with flag on the right. The western Hutt hills are in the background. Accompanying text reads: These two chiefs sold the site of the present Wellington Settlement to Colonel Wakefield, the Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company, in September 1839... Epuni is the uncle of Warepori. Under the same unfavourable circumstances as his nephew, he has nobly deserved the name of "a true gentleman." He still lives at the village of Pitone, loved and respected by the English inhabitants of all ranks. These portraits were drawn at the time of the purchase in 1839... the village of Pitone and the flag-staff at the foot of which Colonel Wakefield took formal possession, appear in the back-ground. The flag depicted is a version of 'Te Kara' or the flag of the United Tribes of New Zealand, shown with the white background coloured red. This flag design was known as the New Zealand national flag circa 1839 and displayed by the New Zealand Company.
