Description: An extensive view at Waimate North, with a windmill, the mission station and the church on the horizon. Bracken in the foreground and a rutted dirt road running away into the distance. Fenced paddocks to the right and three small people walking away on the road to the left. Several dead trees in the foreground. Compare a very similar work by Cyprian Bridge at A-079-035 The work appears to have been part of a sketchbook at an earlier stage, with signs of having been bound on its left side. Probably removed by the Library from album E-320-f, which contained 16 sketches on acquisition by Alexander Turnbull in 1893. Description: Shows two scenes: in the top half 'Leaving Collingwood for Nelson', the small steamer "Lady Barkley" is being loaded with trunks, while the passengers walk on board along the gangplank behind their trunks. In the lower half 'Last ride in Nelson', two women mounted on horses, walk towards a gate in the left foreground. The foreground fence has a row of barbed wire for its top wire. On the right, faintly sketched in, is part of a house, with a garden archway alongside. Description: Shows a view, from privately-owned (fenced) land, towards a stretch of water, probably the Ruamahanga River (which bounded Mein Smith's own property slightly further upstream at the entrance of Dry River into the Ruamahanga). At the right in the middle distance, a small figure pulls a canoe up towards a site covered with tall poles with bulbous (carved?) tops, probably a canoe landing reserve, marked with poles to show who is entitled to land there. This site is separated from the fenced land, by a natural boundary in the form of a tributary stream, whose clay banks are visible. On the distant shore of the water at the left, a stand of trees stretches into the background. The foreground is cleared with two flax plants in the left foreground. On the extreme right, a figure walks along a path towards the markers. Tipene Chrisp suggests that the poles are not standard Hauhau poles. ATL holds a watercolour sketch by Charles Decimus Barraud, made from almost the same spot in 1863 (at B-005-009). It appears not to have been done from William Mein Smith's own property which was further upstream. The title "Otaraia" may indicate simply the Otaraia area rather than the pa itself. Description: View of St Mark's chapel, Remuera, on the left, with a fence dividing it from a small house, surrounded by bush. Mt Eden is in the background. Suggested date based on similarity to other views dated 1857. See Dunn, Michael. John Kinder : Paintings and Photographs (Auckland, 1985), p. 120 for further information. Michael Dunn suggests that "The fact that this watercolour was once in the possession of the Reverend J.W.Stack suggests that Kinder painted versions of the subject to give to friends and interested clergy who had associations with the church." The first St Mark's, designed by Frederick Thatcher, was a small wooden chapel. It was pre-fabricated at St John's College in 1847 and replaced with a larger structure in 1859. It was shifted to Bassett Road and demolished in 1925. Kinder was minister of St Mark's from 1860-1863 and helped to pay for the building of the new church in 1859. Description: Shows single-storey homestead with verandah in left foreground, with lake and mountains in background. In right foreground, a man with arm raised directs his dogs to round up stock (possibly cattle rather than sheep, but indistinct). There is some fencing across the field between dwelling and stock. Stitched to leaf tipped into sketchbook. E-501-f-059 on verso. Henry Taylor was drowned in the Teremakau River in 1867. This picture may therefore predate 1867.
