Description: Scene aboard the Champion timber boat for Nelson from Wellington, with families bedded down on deck, 1852. A curtain in the middle divides some groups from others. The families appear to be lying in the bow of the ship. Some are already asleep, others are awake. One woman on the right is breastfeeding a baby. There are about 25 people lying down. Pearse has inscribed the front left figure as 'I myself' and the seated woman immediately beyond him as 'Scotch neighbour' Inscriptions: Album page - above image - title and date continue: the only kind of craft plying between these ports in these days and shame to the skipper for the accommodation. However in the next run from Sydney to New Zealand the Champion went down with all hands - the Skipper and crew were never heard of again. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: View of Dunedin in 1849 taken from a park-like foreground area with a man, a woman, and a child admiring the view, framed by trees, with the embryo town in the middle distance on the left, the harbour on the right and hills in the background. Based on a watercolour in the Hocken Library, completed 1849. The lithograph is considered to have been published approximately 1853. "Little Paisley" (the name is no longer current) was so named because it was a settlement of weavers, from Paisley. It was on the site of the present Southern Cemetery. Description: The Wallace family on the verandah of their house. A Maori pattern has been carved into a panel which runs along the front of the verandah. Also includes one of the granddaughter's of the whaler James Reed and Kahumahinga of Ngati Toa, the daughter of Sarah Reed and Spencer Von Strumer. Kahumahinga was the daughter of Paretona, a sister Werawera, who was the grandfather of Te Rauparaha. To the Maori mind they were very closely related. Date based on what can be seen of the women's clothing and hair style. On assment of this it is unlikely that his photograph is earlier that 1891, or later than 1897. This was Tamihana Te Rauparaha's former house. It was situated in what is now Matene Street in Otaki township but burnt down during the 1920s. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s).

Description: Mr and Mrs Thomas Roots and their twelve children in front of their home at Springvale, Wanganui, in the 1870s. Photograph taken by William James Harding. "Thomas Roots arrived in Wanganui in 1857 and was employed as the County foreman. The house began as a two room cottage and was enlarged at various times to accommodate an expanding family. Dormer windows allow light into the upper bedrooms. The verandah is decorated with a "union jack" balustrade and fretwork brackets and frieze. To protect the small children a gate secures the porch." Description: Shows Weld's third New Zealand home "Brackenfield" near Amberley with his wife and two oldest children in the foreground. A horse is beside Mrs Weld and the two children. The house and garden look newly established with clumps of cabbage trees and flaxes in flower and flower gardens closer to the house. There is a conservatory to the right of the house and another building, probably a barn, to the far right. To the left of the house is a small chapel. The Welds married in March 1859, so the two children, two-and-a half years later are likely to be the two oldest. Weld purchased the initial 304 acres of land for Brackenfield in July 1861. The 16-room kauri house, its timber shipped from Auckland, was demolished in 1964. Weld also laid out the park-like grounds and imported English deer and game birds. The chapel, one of the first Catholic churches in Canterbury, was moved from the Brackenfield entrance in the 1950s to the main road through Amberley Other Titles - Amberley Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Brackenfield N Z F.A.W.
