Description: A small wooden cottage with chimney at one end, three windows, a thatched roof, standing on its own in a bush clearing in Hutt Forest Known as Hope Cottage originally; when Hawkeshead was built this became the kitchen. Tall chimneys at both ends of the house, and an established garden, with a circular bed in front of the house. Bush is shown behind. The house was in Lower Hutt Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Initialled L F S Lucelle Frances Swainson (1842-1910) was the daughter of noted botanist William Swainson (1824-1887).
