Description: View of a man (thought to be Reverend Joseph Matthews) standing near gravestones in the churchyard of the 1st Saviours Church in Kaitaia, Northland, with the wooden church building in the background, buttressed by props. Photograph taken between 1875 and 1888 by an unidentified photographer. Source of descriptive information - From back of file print: In a heavy gale in 1875 the timbers of the church cracked, giving rise to the fear that the church would collapse. As a consequence 2 props were placed on either side of the exterior walls. These seem to be visible in the photo. Man thought to be Rev. Joseph Matthews (1808-1895). (Information from "Matthews of Kaitaia" by S C & L J Matthews, Reed: 1940).
