Worsley, Charles Nathaniel, 1862-1923 :Ruanui drawing room 1918. J F Studholme, Ruanui,...

Date: 1918

By: Worsley, Charles Nathaniel, 1862-1923

Reference: C-162-002

Description: A view of the sunlit drawing room showing various polished tables and chairs, blue curtains, several vases of flowers, a loose carpet, bookcases, a large collection of blue and white china mounted in rows high on the walls, and above the fireplace. The wallpaper is of a diagonal diamond design. Two pewter or silver tankards stand on the table in the centre foreground, beside a gold and white vase, and a glass vase of red flowers. The ceiling consists of narrow wooden boards. The view looks towards greenery and flowers in the garden through an open window of small glass panes. An adjacent hallway or dining room at a slightly higher level can be glimpsed at the far right. Previously thought to show a Christchurch drawing room, the work probably shows the drawing room of the house at Ruanui, in the Rangitikei District, the property of Joseph F Studholme. An inscription on the reverse indicates both the identity of the house and of its owner. Joseph Studholme was a brother of Major John Studholme of Coldstream, Canterbury. Related views: two further watercolours of the house and garden, undated, sold at International Art Centre, Auckland, March 2012. Possibly commissioned from the artist at the same time Other Titles - New Zealand Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour on board 380 x 555 mm. Provenance: Formerly from the collection of a private owner in Christchurch. Processing information: Deframed by the Library.
