Description: View of the start of construction work on the Berhampore (or Centennial) Flats on Adelaide Road in Wellington, for the State Housing Department. Shows the building site, and the structure and scaffolding of the apartment block. In the distance is the premises of the Berhampore Tennis Club, and other houses in Berhampore and surrounding hill suburbs. Photograph taken in May 1939, by an unidentified photographer for the Evening Post. Source of descriptive information - Caption from Evening Post 26/5/1939, p7, reads: "A start has been made by the contractors with the erection of the multiple dwelling block at Berhampore for the State Housing Department. When completed it will be the largest building of its kind in New Zealand, containing 50 separate flats and eleven garages. In the background is the Berhampore Tennis Club's premises".
