Description: View along Invercargill's main street showing a number of houses and businesses. The earliest known view of Invercargill Between 1969, the time of acquisition by the Library, and 2010, attributed to W B D Mantell, based on handwriting, style of drawing and the fact that Mantell worked with Douglas, and was involved in the early settlement of Invercargill. However Mantell was in England in 1858, the date of this drawing. The drawing was earlier owned by Gerhard Mueller, who arrived in New Zealand in 1859, the year after this drawing was made. The `Pearson' whose house is drawn is W H Pearson, Commissioner of Lands, 1857-1884. `Grief' the butcher was J M Grieve. The Albion Hotel was also known as Linds Accommodation House. Description: Shows Marion Sim, wife of John Sim, feeding horses. The public house, or hotel was run by brothers John and Andrew Sim. Exhibited in 'Two centuries of New Zealand landscape art' Exhibition at Auckland City Art Gallery, 2 February - 22 April 1990. Exhibited in 'Treasures in Trust' exhibition to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1995. According to N.Z. Historic Places, no. 46, Dec 1993, p. 17 "There has been a public house at Mohaka since 1859 or before. The first was established by John and Marion Sim on the south side of the mouth of the Mohaka river, opposite the large Maori community centred round the Te Huke and Hiruharama Pa. In 1859, when the postal service was established between Napier and Wairoa, the pub was already there. The Sims were running a ferry and operated the post office from the pub. Description: Two rows of Newman's buses and service cars filled with passengers, Murchison. The vehicles are parked in parallel lines. One line is parked outside Ross's Hotel and the other outside McNee & Co. The Commercial Hotel can be seen on the corner diagonally across from the photographer. Photograph taken by Frederick Nelson Jones during the 1920s. Occasion identified as a tour of Canterbury farmers around the Motueka and Riwaka areas (Papers Past, Nelson Evening Mail, 14 May 1929, similar photograph in New Zealand Herald, 19 June 1929) Formerly identified as 1927 Royal Tour by Duke and Duchess of York. (Very similar photograph published in Graeme Carter's book Travelling with Newmans (Wanganui, GT Carter Travelling Books, 2006), pp. 16-17 has idenified it as this); and as buses carrying passengers from Kawatiri who had arrived by train to mark the opening of the Glenhope-Kawatiri section of railway and who were transported to lunch to Murchison by Newmans Service Cars.
