Description: Looking along The Strand, Tauranga, from Monmouth redoubt. Photograph taken between 1873 and 1877 by Herbert Deveril. Includes the Town Wharf. The two storied building is the Tauranga Hotel. To the right of the hotel are the Bank of New Zealand and the Tauranga Store. Brain's boatbuilding yard is in the bottom left hand corner. The Native Hostelry is at bottom right, the long building with a verandah. To the right of the hotel are the Bank of New Zealand and the Tauranga Store. Source of descriptive information - Dated between 1873 and 1877 due to the following: The photographer Deveril arrived in New Zealand in 1873, and the Victoria Wharf, not pictured, was built in 1877 (see Neil G Hanson, History of Tauranga harbour & port ([Tauranga, N.Z. : Port of Tauranga Ltd.], 1997) p 14. Description: The cartoon is a series of caricatures of members of the Monetary Commission of 1955 (Royal Commission to report on the monetary, banking and credit system in New Zealand) along with a short quotation for each of them. Clockwise from the left they are - 'Sir Arthur Tyndall, Chairman, Judge of the Arbitration Court. "I claim to be a practical man..",Mr R.M. Hutton-Potts, Managing Editor, Southland News and well-known radio speaker on international affairs. "With quaifications and reservations...", Mr F.C. Jordan, Barrister and Solicitor, of Auckland, representing the N.Z. Social Credit Association. "I submit, Mr Chairman and gentlemen...", Mr E.D. Wilkinson, Public Accountant and Member of the Commission. "Answer my question plainly, please.", Mr F.P. Walsh, President of the Federation of Labour. "My people are interested..", Sir Wilfred Sim Q.C., Counsel for Associated Banks and Dr O.C. Mazengarb Q.C., Counsel for Mr H.J. Kelliher and the Mirror Publishing Company Ltd. Said the Chairman "I'm between the devil and the deep Q.C.'s." Mr C.G. Trotter, Managing Director of the Farmers' C0-operative Organisation Society of N.Z. Context - The Monetary Commission was a Royal Commission established in March 1955 to investigate the deficiencies of the banking system and to try to display inconsistencies in Social Credit precepts. The school boy is John Cecil Coote 1889-1937 (known as Jack) who was a friend of C.F.A.Broad's son, Charles V.Newton Broad. Photographer unidentified. Determined to succeed in his chosen profession he headed to Matuara...but not a bank in sight. Puzzled, he raced to Wyndham..."This is getting serious" he muttered. Then it crossed his mind - which is not a long journey for Ned - try Bluff...but nothing! Otautau was the last straw. Description: Notorious Australian bank robber Ned Kelly has arrived on his horse. Exhibition caption reads - The Bank of New Zealand had lent speculatively and recklessly to some of the 1980s entrepreneurs who were corporate cowboys on a scale that Ned Kelly would never have imagined possible. After their over-hyped companies collapsed following the 1987 stock market crash, successive Labour and National governments bailed out the bank to a collective tune of $1.3 billion. Calls for a public enquiry were stifled by the secretive sale of the bank to the National Australia Bank in late 1992. Exhibited in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' exhibition of cartoons on the New Zealand-Australian relationship curated by Ian F. Grant of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and exhibited in the National Library Gallery from 28 November 2001 to 24 February 2002 to mark the centenary of Australian Federation. Also exhibited at X Space Gallery, Auckland University of Technology, Auckland in mid-March 2002 and at Old Parliament House, Canberra, Australia from 26 March 2003 to 29 June 2003. Description: The cartoon shows (from left) Minister of Energy and Resources Gerry Brownlee, who is wearing a 'sexy coal' tshirt, Finance Minister Bill English who wears a 'Double Dipton' tshirt, and PM John Key who wears an 'ambitions' tshirt. They stare at three tattered flags that bears the words 'Mining in Parks', 'Kiwibank sale' and 'Urewera settlement'. John Key who also holds a document headed 'whaling' comments that maybe they should do some market research first. Refers to all four of these recent issues - mining in Schedule 4 areas of national parks, government asset sales, the Urewera settlement with Tuhoe and the conservation of whales, as having been extremely contentious.
