Description: In the first of these two scenes the leader of the National Party, Don Brash, is shown in a meeting discussing strategy for the 2005 national elections. His advisor suggests he should follow a similar strategy to the recently re-elected Prime Minister of Australia, John Howard. In the Australian federal election the Labour Party lost at least 3 seats because of their anti-logging stance. In the second scene, Brash is delivering a speech in which he gives National Party support to logging in Tasmania. A small boy scout with the features of Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, eagerly holds out his plate. Refers to the political embarrassment caused by John Howard's preferring to attend an Australian beach barbecue at Pine Ridge rather than attend the New Zealand ANZAC service at Gallipoli. Description: Contrast between the economic performance of Australia (positive) and New Zealand (negative) over 1984-1990 period. Exhibition caption reads - New Zealand introduced a rigid, New-Right regime in the mid-1980s, beginning with 'Rogernomics' and reinforced by 'Ruthomania'. Australian policies were more pragmatic and driven more by commonsense than ideology. There, the government continued to play a role in areas where, across the Tasman, responsibility was handed holus-bolus to the private sector. Australia's economy thrived while New Zealand's shrivelled. Exhibited in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' exhibition of cartoons on the New Zealand-Australian relationship curated by Ian F. Exhibition caption reads - In 2001, Australian and New Zealand defence priorities diverged more sharply than previously. While John Howard's Australian government boosted defence expenditure and re-equipped strike elements in its airforce, Helen Clark's New Zealand government abandoned all pretence that the RNZAF was capable of a military role and concentrated on better equipping the army to play a peace-keeping role in trouble-spots like East Timor.
