Description: Nineteen vignettes of daily life, mostly of Maori life, including a parody of a Goldie portrait (All 'e same te Pakeha) showing an elderly Maori man grimacing and quaffing rum; a Maori woman with toothache; "A hero of many fights", a profile view of a tattooed man with many bandages on his face; "On the Waipa", a Maori woman rowing as she drinks alcohol, with a small boy and a pig eyeing one another in the front of the canoe. Also scenes of European, or not racially specific life: "The end of the garden" showing a cow chewing up planted carrots; "Crossing the Manukau Bar" with people vomitting over the edge of a ship in high waves; "Roses" with a Pakeha man with a drinker's red nose; "In the Domain" showing groups of lovers embracing; "The Emerald Isle" showing Irishmen murdering each other; "Waiting to be shod" showing two old hacks waiting for shoeing at the blacksmith's, while the blacksmith embraces a woman. Description: View from a high point looking down over the settlement of Auckland in the distance. There are sheep in the right foreground near a cabbage tree. The steeples of St Paul's (on the left) and St Barnabas (on the right) along with the roofs of houses can be seen. Devonport with Mount Victoria and North Head and Rangitoto Island are in the distance across Waitemata Harbour Attribution on stylistic grounds. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Bird's-eye view of central Auckland - "This view is compiled and drawn as from a point one thousand feet above and one hundred feet to the rear of the Hospital during the year 1885 and part of 1886 by George Treacy Stevens, Auckland, N. Z.". All the streets are named and every building is shown, as well as the wharves and part of the harbour. Grafton Road, the hospital and part of Auckland Domain dominate the foreground, and the view extends beyond St Mary's Bay (West Haven boat harbour) in the north-west, a block beyond Union Street in the west, to the beginning of Karangahape Road in the south-west and to Judges Bay and part of Hobson Bay in the east. Description: The edge of Auckland Domain and its fences in the foreground, ringed with young trees. Houses in the middle distance and a train at the water's edge to the left. Three yachts and a small ship on the Waitemata Harbour and Devonport with houses along the waterfront, North Head and Rangitoto across the water. Exhibited in Alfred Sharpe, touring to Auckland City Art Gallery, Museum of New Zealand and Dunedin Public Art Gallery, 1993. Reproduced as a Turnbull Library Print, 1983 cf B-051-005, a lithograph based on a similar view from the New Zealand Observer and Free Lance of 20 February 1886, p. 20. See also TL3/1/1 4 November 1986. The lithograph is based on a pen and ink drawing. Other Titles - The picnic ground, Auckland Domain, 1877 Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - A. Sharpe. 1877. Physical Description: Watercolour 420 x 630 mm Provenance: Shown at the Auckland Society of Artists' fourth biennial (and final) exhibition in November 1877 with the title The Picnic Ground, Auckland Domain. Given to Oliver Mays by the artist, passing by family descent to Mays' granddaughter, Jocelyn Young. A note on the verso, printed in black felt-tip pen explains: "This painting was given to my grandfather Oliver Mays by A. Sharpe who used to go to visit every Sunday for dinner. My grandfather was able to talk the deaf and dumb language by fingers. [Sharpe was profoundly deaf]. The old house on the Devonport waterfront was lived in by us when my late husband A. R. D. Fairburn was alive. Jocelyn (Mays-Fairburn) Young."
