Eagle Airways general manager Carrie Hurihanganui says that Air New Zealand had worked during the past year to make regional flights about 15 per cent cheaper to increase traffic to provincial towns, but increasing landing fees could reverse that and hit tourism to the region. Richard Branson slams alliance rejection with Air New Zealand. 14 September 2010

Date: 2010

From: Winter, Mark, 1958- : Digital cartoons published in the Southland Times and other papers

Reference: DCDL-0015577

Description: The title of the cartoon reads 'Richard Branson slams alliance rejection with Air New Zealand'. The words 'Virgin Blue' are in the centre of the frame. Richard Branson wearing a tshirt bearing the words 'Plane tiff' says 'You can't have the Trans-Tasman route losing its virginity'. Refers to the news the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission blocked a proposed alliance with Air NZ on the transtasman route. Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Group Chairman, told ABC he is baffled by ACCC's decision: "They have said in the past that Qantas and Air New Zealand can form an alliance if they so wished. And Qantas has alliances with British Airways; they have alliances with numerous airlines around the world. All we ask the competition authorities to do is to treat Virgin Blue, which is a much smaller airline, in an equal way and allow us to create a level playing field." Blue has already withdrawn from New Zealand domestic routes because of steep losses and Branson told Australia's ABC radio that flights from Australia to New Zealand under the Blue's Pacific Blue brand "were losing money." "We think if we can work together with Air New Zealand, we can offer a proper competitor to Qantas," Branson argued. "If we're a strong competitor, we can keep fares low and we can keep Qantas honest and we believe that's in the interest of the traveling public." Moir, Alan, 1947- :This is your captain speaking... Sydney Morning Herald, 10 September...

Date: 2001

By: Moir, Alan, 1947-

Reference: DX-004-004

Description: New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark is piloting a disintegrating plane labelled 'Air NZ'. The left engine, labelled 'Ansett' has broken off. Exhibition caption reads - In early September 2001, when Ansett Australia was jettisoned by Air New Zealand, the New Zealand government was accused, particularly in Australia, of dithering over assisting with the restructuring of Air New Zealand. The airline had bought half of Ansett from TNT in 1996 and the remaining 50% from News Corp in early 2000 for an inflated amount. Inadequate due diligence complicated by poor company records, additional competition in Australian skies, the grounding of planes, greatly increased fuel costs, the need for fleet replacement, and overstaffing all contributed to Ansett's losses spiralling out of control. Exhibited in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' exhibition of cartoons on the New Zealand-Australian relationship curated by Ian F. Grant of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and exhibited in the National Library Gallery from 28 November 2001 to 24 February 2002 to mark the centenary of Australian Federation. Also exhibited at X Space Gallery, Auckland University of Technology, Auckland in mid-March 2002 and at Old Parliament House, Canberra, Australia from 26 March 2003 to 29 June 2003. Published in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' by Ian F. Grant, published by the New Zealand Cartoon Archive in association with Tandem Press, 2001. Quantity: 1 digital image(s) ..
