Description: A class locomotive (NZR Number 161), with two men standing beside, one of whom is the photographer himself, leaning against the locomotive, on the right. Photographed taken by A P Godber, probably at Addington workshops, Christchurch. Source of descriptive information - Formerly described as being at Petone, but information from Library client states this locomotive never operated in the North Island and the location is probably the Addington workshops. NZR locomotive no. 161 (4-6-2) was built by New Zealand Railway Workshops at Addington, Christchurch, in 1906, and was sold in 1964. Wheel base 14 ft 6 in, Weight empty 7.8 T, Horse power 48 R.A.C., Horse power 95 at 1850 revs p.m., M.P.G. 18, Max speed 50, Engine, Leyland Diesel 8.6 litre, Passengers 20. Dismantled 1940. Blueprint plan for this locomotive is in Godber Album Vol 108, p 2 (PA1-q-101). \"A\" 409 was built at New Zealand Railways workshops at Addington (maker's No 83/07), in 1907. Went into service in July 1907 and was written off in October 1959. Redesignated \"Ab\" class from 1915 to 1930, when reverted to \"A\" class. See \"Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863 to 1971\" by W G Lloyd (1974), and \"Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives\" by A N Palmer & W W Stewart (1965).
