Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea. Surrounded by native vegetation including nikau, toetoe, tree fern, flax, a cabbage tree, rata, clematis paniculata and ferns. There are also taiaha and tewhatewha (Maori weapons) used as backgrounds to two of the inserts. Description: Cadastral map, unfinished, of the Cashmere Estate from Ranui Terrace to Onslow Road adjoining the Main Hutt Road. The completed part of the map includes numbered sections with acreages and boundary measurements. Streets are named, Deed Plan numbers are noted. Additions to this map include values in pounds sterling and dates between 1920 to 1928. Khandallah substation is named, Centennial Park and the Village Area School. A gully is marked. A pencilled note refers to land given to the Wellington City Council in exchange for roads and other considerations. The incomplete part of the map includes un-named roads and un-numbered sections, some with approximate measurements. Two areas of land, with acreages, are noted as 'useless for building'. Probably Wellington Harbour from the Hutt Road or Petone in the 1850s looking towards the twown of Wellington. Attributed to Fox on stylistic grounds, along with A-210-008 and A-210-009. The figures in the foreground and the manner of rendering choppy sea are very typical of Fox's work Displayed in "Paradise" (Gifts to the nation), National Library Gallery, January - April 2005.
