Description: A detailed and early view of a goldminer's camp near Murchison, built for a short-lived mining venture at Owen Reefs, 1880s. A number of trees have been cut down, and stumps and felled trunks are prominent in the foreground. A number of tents have been erected and at least three log cabins have been built. The forest and bush is dense, with a view of the peak of Mount Owen rising beyond. Two men can be seen in the camp, in workmen's clothes, boots and hats. Two saddled horses are also seen, as is a black and white cat, which sits on a felled log. The Owen reefs are situated west of the Owen River, a tributary of the Buller, about 100 miles from its mouth. It is possible that the artist is Mr E. Butler, underground surveyor (also mentioned as C.E. or Civil Engineer), who worked as an engineer in the Owen reefs area in the 1880s.
