Description: "Ua" 172 steam locomotive, type 4-6-0, built by Sharp Stewart. Copy negative by Albert Percy Godber of a photograph possibly taken by W W Stewart. This information from a reproduction of this image in "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer & W W Stewart, in which the caption reads: "'Ua' 172 at Invercargill, showing the position to which the running board was raised. W W Stewart Collection." A print from this negative is at PA1-q-101 (Godber Album vol 108, page 47.) "Ua" 172 was built in 1899 (maker's no 4502/99), entered service on 23 November 1899 and was written off in February 1936.
