Description: Shows St Paul's Anglican Church (right) and the Catholic church (left) at Rangiaohia. Blewitt's Redoubt is in the centre, with military tents behind protective fencing. The view is flanked by trees on both sides, and the artist has drawn another tree horizontally across the top of the page. St Paul's Church, built about 1853, is still standing in modern Te Awamutu. Description: Soldiers within an earthen rampart, with two standing guard, gazing out across a plain towards low hills. Within the shelter of the rampart are several tents, two with soldiers reclining inside them, one with a standing soldier leaning against it, and another seated soldier in front of it, smoking a pipe. Three rifles are stacked upright together in the centre. Probably a South Taranaki scene, the drawings are mounted in the album in chronolical order and those immediately before and after are of Taranaki Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Hand drawn military map of the area from the Waimapu River, including the Tauranga-Rotorua Road to Okauia, Irihanga, Wairoa River and Tauranga Harbour. Includes roads and tracks, one of which is marked as 'my scouting track - there and back close on forty miles'. Gate Pa is marked, settlements, rivers and some roads are named. Scenes of action are marked as crossed swords and some battle sites are named - Gate Pa, Te Ranga, Oropi, Waehi, Whakamarama. Directional arrows point to Rotorua and Okauia. Includes some hachures, sites of clearings and a location of a house. Title partly taken from the pencilled heading, believed to have been added at a later date, and the catalogue card. Pencilled title of map is written along the top edge and on reverse: [Sketch map of country around Gate Pa ... ca. 1864] believed to have been added at a later date. Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s). Description: Shows Rangihaeata's stockade, built and captured 1846, at Pauatahanui; pickets; a military tent with a figure in red in the foreground. The terrain appears to be misrepresented; compare R H Wynyard's Old stockade at Pahatanui [1852] Title from verso; initials and date indistinct Date (apparently 1823) is wrong. More likely to be 1846 or later. The stockade was built and captured by British troops in 1846. Description: A view looking from the south bank towards the north bank of the Pātea, with a European fortification on the cliff-top opposite. Soldiers are standing at the water's edge and two ships are moored further down the river. The same spot is shown some 20 years earlier in a pencil sketch by Charles Heaphy, 'View on the Patea River, Cooks Straits' (ref. no. A-146-004). Shows a pā on the clifftop, previously identified as Waimate Pā but likely to be Haera Hau Pā. The 1860s camp is also shown from another angle in a watercolour by John Tremenhere Johnston, 'Military camp at the mouth of the Patea River, 1863 or 1864' (ref. no. B-079-022).
