Description: Shows a general photographic view looking down on the township of Akaroa, with rata blossom and a cabbage tree in the foreground. There is some light red colouring added to the monochrome photograph. The pamphlet describes the attractions of Akaroa, a township on Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, and describes road and rail transportation thither. Description: Shows view of a collection of buildings adjoining the waterfront, including a circular glasshouse or pavillion. Of the closely grouped buildings, the verandahed two-storeyed building with pink side is Garwood's general store (identified by reference to Neg. 1/2-08561 in PRS), and the four-gabled building next-but-one, is Bruce's Hotel (identified in PRS Neg. 1/2-10294). There are willow and other European trees alongside the buildings. The hills behind are partially wooded. Probably painted around the end of the 1860s. The artist is known to have been in the vicinity after the wreck of the ketch (probably the "Crest") in 1868 - his picture of Akaroa Heads is dated 1869. PRS (Pictorial Reference Service) photo including Bruce's Hotel and dated "1860s" shows the hotel with only three gables, whereas another photo dated "1870s", shows it with the four gables, as in this painting. Description: Shows an unidentified woman standing beside a Kinman cannon (made in 1808) on display at the Britomart Reserve, Akaroa. A plaque on the cannon says 'Ordance gun from the HMS Britomart which arrived at Akaroa 10 August 1840'. Wooden colonial period building and bare tree visible in background. Photograph taken by the Steffano Webb Photographic Studio, Christchurch. Source of additional descriptive information - Location provided by Library client. Information on cannon provided by the Akaroa Civic Trust (see website www.akaroacivictrust.co.nz 7 September 2012) Cannon placed on Britomart Reserve in 1908 and described as being from the HMS Britomart, a British naval vessel which came to Akaroa in 1840 to demonstrate British sovereignity over the South Island. The 1808 Kinman cannon had been sent out by the British Admiralty for display at the 1906-1907 International Exhbition held in Christchurch. The cannon had ben requested by Akaroa Mayor Etienne Le Lievre. After the closure of the Exhibition, the cannon was sent to Akaroa. It is the same type of cannon that would have been on the HMS Britomart, but is not from the Britomart itself. Source of descriptive information - Negative register and inscriptions on negative.
