The occasion is the opening of the Coromandel gold fields in October 1852. Based on a watercolour by Charles Heaphy, 'Committee at Patapata'. Mount Maunganui in background, with ships Esk, Harrier and Jason in harbour. Based on a drawing by E A Williams. The lower images shows British troops in the foreground behind trees, and in a trench leading up towards a hilltop pa, where a British flag can be seen flying.
