[Carmichael, John Wilson], 1799-1868 :[Study for H.M.S. Erebus and Terror with native c...

Date: 1841

By: Carmichael, John Wilson, 1800-1868

Reference: A-234-017

Description: A sketch of the ships 'Erebus' and 'Terror' in the background of a scene showing some seven Maori waka in the foreground. There are coastal headlands in the left background. The waka containing the most figures has a high stern-piece (taurapa). The ships visited the Bay of Islands in the winter of 1840, and again in August 1841. The composition is similar (but reversed) to an oil painting in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich: "'Erebus' and the 'Terror' in New Zealand, August 1841", painted around 1847. It is possible this sketch was done in 1841 on the spot, and used for later oil paintings. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink and wash drawing, 160 x 265 mm.
