Description: Shows Wellington city and harbour viewed from the area near the top of Vivian Street. A figure in horseback rides along a track curving around the hill slope at the left, and four head of cattle stand on a path amongst willows and other trees at the right. Further away is a road, possibly Abel Smith Street, with buildings including a house with a square turret. A church at left centre near the waterfront appears to be of Gothic design. There are several sail and steam ships in the harbour near Queens Wharf. The Hutt Valley and the snow-capped Tararuas can be seen in the distance. The original watercolour for a chromolithograph published in Barraud's "New Zealand graphic and descriptive" (London, 1879). Accompanied by backing board with name of Mrs Pownall, previous owner. Description: View looking east up the Otira River towards Arthur's Pass, with the road crossing a bridge and running to the left of the river. The original for Barraud's chromolithograph of the same scene (with the addition of a Cobb & Co coach and four horses, plus a lone horseman) in New Zealand Graphic and Descriptive (London, 1877) opp. p. 40. The associated text mentions that the scene is just before the 'Zig-Zag' not long before the first of the accommodation houses on the road, where the horses were changed. See ref. no. Physical Description: Watercolour and Chinese white 455 x 785 mm Provenance: Hung with a watercolour of Lake Coleridge Station, 1870 (D-022-007), in Government House, Wellington, during the governorship of Sir George Grey. Sold at auction in Wellington to the vendor's grandfather, also a Mr Scrymgeour (or Scrimgeour) in the 1880s or 1890s. Mr Scrymgeour migrated to Australia in the early 1900s to Goondawindi Station. The paintings passed to his son (died 1968) then to his grandson, William John Tyndal Scrymgeour, born ca 1922, of "Arran", Warwick, Queensland.

Description: Shows a view looking along the valley with glimpses of a lake (probably Lake Pearson) with mountain ranges in the distance. In the left foreground, a horseman rides along a dirt road which curves away at the right, where two figures walk, possibly wearing backpacks. There are signs of shingle slides and erosion on the slope of the bushcovered hill at the left. This is the original watercolour from which the chromolithograph "Craigieburn Valley" was produced for Barraud's "New Zealand graphic and descriptive", 1877. Barraud's associated text refers to 'the lake seen in the distance is another of the beautiful glacier lakes ... takes its name from a sheep station in the vicinity ...'. This makes it most likely to be Lake Pearson. If it is Lake Pearson, the snow-clad mountain beyond it is probably Mount Binzer and the hill alongside is Purple Hill. There is some possibility that the lake is Lake Grasmere, but Grasmere is not flanked by a steep hill as shown in this view Label on backing board (not retained, not in hand of the artist): "Scene on the West Coast Road from Christchurch to Hokitika passing through the Craigburn Valley" Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows a view of Poukawa Lake in Central Hawkes Bay, set amongst hills. Two Maori are walking on the road, away from the viewer. One is a man wearing a Maori cloak and a white European hat; the other, a woman with a small child wrapped to her back in a blanket. The scene looks out from the dense bush of Te Aute Road across Lake Poukawa, towards the Kaokaoroa range of hills.
