Description: Shows a long low wooden house at the right, on top of a high bank above a river. There are hills in the background. Another small house or hut is visible in the left foreground, on the left bank of the river, with another in the distance at the foot of the background hills. Description: Shows a ragged tree stump and trees standing in the foreground, in front of a hilly landscape, with part of Matuku Pa and its fences below and to the left. Mr Randall Springer of the Whanganui Historical Society has identified this as a view in the Mokai Patea Range east of Utiku, rather than Patea in Taranaki. Identified by Richard Steedman, November 2003, as one of five views taken from Matuku Pa, inland Patea, on 13 March 1845. Description: A Maori family posed in front of a wooden cottage with thatched roof. A wooden chimney is on the left. The group consists of 6 women and a man. The house may be at the kaika at The Neck, Stewart Island. There are four photographs of Stewart Island Maori in Taylor's sketchbook, all albumen prints appearing to date from the 1860s. He is not known to have visited Stewart Island himself, but did call in by ship at Bluff in 1871 on his way back from Australia (he also visited Port Chalmers on the same trip) and he may have acquired the photographs on that occasion.
