Description: Watercolour shows the south Wairarapa coast, possibly near Te Kopi looking west from near Cape Palliser, with dwellings and probably a whaling station (Wades Whaling Station? as mentioned in the Wellington Spectator of 1844 - quoted in Mita Carter's "Early Palliser Bay" (1982)) in the centre. Several men stand on the steep hillside at the right. The foreground terrain is covered with low scrub. Entitled "Whaling station, Palliser Bay, Wairarapa" in McArthur's August 1987 auction catalogue. Dated from other views of the same area. Description: Shows a view of Wellington Harbour with Thorndon Quay or Esplanade, the year before the reclamation started. The square object along the pier at the end of the esplanade may be an early version of the Thorndon swimming baths, although the later turretted version was built out into the harbour from reclaimed land. The foreground shows lawns surrounded with trees, probably the garden at Tiakiwai, the home of the Stowe family. Description: View from above Grafton Gully, covered in dense bush, with fenced hills and Governor Hobson's grave in the cemetery to the left. Government House is left of centre in the middle distance and three other houses overlooking Grafton Gully are somewhat closer on the right, one of them the home of William Connell, the first Postmaster-General and his wife Isabella. In the distance across the water, the flagstaff marks Mount Victoria, with Rangitoto beyond that. The flat island further off, left of centre is Tiritiri. Painted in early 1843, before the artist moved to an appointment at Russell. A fence has been raised around Governor Hobson's grave. The funeral had taken place in November 1842. Description: The Acheron in the distance, dwarfed by the towering mountains of The Narrows in Milford Sound, with Yates Point on the left. In the right foreground is Anita Bay. A large Maori war canoe in the right foreground The Narrows lead into the inner part of the fiord. The Maori canoe is likely to have been a piece of artistic licence to give the scale of the fiord. There was no mention in the account of the Acheron's visit to Milford Sound of any encounter with Maori. Other works by Evans held at A-133/4&5, D-008-002. Description: Shows blockhouse in distance atop a small hill. In the foreground, in front of small cliffs on the shoreline, is a stretch of water, a canoe, and three figures, possibly spear fishing. The title includes "Manukau Hrbour". The Whau River arises north of the Manukau Harbour, and flows into the Waitemata Harbour at Avondale. Nevertheless this view could have been taken from Manukau Harbour looking north to a blockhouse built near the source of the Whau, rather than at its mouth on the Waitemata. Description: View from the south end of Paihia Beach, probably in the 1840s, looking north along the beach with a row of houses at the foot of the hill to the left. Several Maori with their canoes are on shore, and a food storage platform appears outside the fenced area surrounding the European houses. Includes William Williams' house, a two-storied residence, built of stone and mortar, with 3 dormer windows, burnt down 15 Feb. 1856 Catalogued by both Sotheby's and McArthur's as the work of Cuthbert Clarke. However on both stylistic and handwriting grounds (c.f. Merrett's work in A.T.L. and the British Library), the work appears to be by Merrett.
