Alington, William Herbert, 1841-1938 :Talbot Trees, Rakaia, NZ. [ca 1872?]

Date: 1872

From: Alington family :[Assorted watercolours, lithographs, sketches and curios, either by or belonging to family members. ca 1833-1961]

Reference: E-932-008

Description: Shows a view of Talbot Trees, which was bought by the Alington brothers in 1872, and which became the family home of Charles Sydney Alington in 1878. Unlike the pencil sketch of the property featured in the sketchbook, the house and adjacent cottage are relatively bare of plants growing around them, the cottage does not have a chimney, the garden is unestablished, and the pine trees behind the house are immature. The roof of a neighbouring building, which also looks like a house, can be seen behind and to the right. These would suggest that the sketch was done around the time of the purchase of the house. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Talbot Trees Rakaia NZ [in pencil] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour on paper, 127 x 180 mm Provenance: Artworks created by the family of Wellington architect William Alington, donated in 2011 Transfers: From Manuscripts & Archives - MS-Group-2000 Alington family papers.
