Description: Blenheim wharf in 1872 with surrounding waterway and buildings. In the centre is the paddle steamer `Lyttelton' and on the right is the brigantine `Falcon'. Photograph taken by William Collie. Source of descriptive information - Historical notes supplied by Canterbury Heritage, September 2008. Inscriptions: Verso - SS Lyttelton & the Brigantine Falcon at the wharves Blenheim 1872 The information and date accompanying this record comes from the back of the original print. However, according to Canterbury Heritage, the paddle tug SS Lyttelton was launched in 1878. They also suggest that this photograph was taken during the vessel's delivery voyage in early November of that year (ref. http://canterburyheritage.blogspot.com/2008/09/lytteltons-second-tug.html). Description: View from the hills above Tuamarina, looking south, with dense bush in the foreground, grassy plains along the shore to the left, the passage of streams marked by trees, a stand of bush in the centre distance marking the site of Grovetown, with the site of Blenheim to its right, the Wither Hills in the far distance. Two men are standing in the foreground viewing the scene. One has a pack on his back, and a walking stick, and gestures with his left hand toward the vista. The other man smokes a pipe and carries an axe The yellow toning of the grasses suggests that they are native grasses, shown prior to European burning off in preparation for farming Richard Airey put together a provenance statement and ownership history for the painting, September 2015 (Clio #562825) Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - art of Wairau.
