Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea. Description: Looking across a river towards mountains. A small Maori canoe is on the river, with flax, cabbage trees and other bush on both sides Originally catalogued by the Library as being painted by J B Fraser, a possible interpretation of the artist's monogram. The annotations on the back were believed to be signed by surveyor Malcolm Fraser, from a reading of the illegible first name. However the writing, and style of drawing and painting match those of Captain I T B Fraser, artist of a group of sketches of the war in Waikato about 1864, Library reference number E-571-q. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - signed with initials in a monogram and date in red brushpoint, on a rock, lower left. Also verso, in pencil: Title: Between Cashels Station and Shortland, Thames Goldfields, about 23 miles up the Ohinemuri River by water: after you leave the bend by a place called Purri Purri you will see the same on the right. Description: Shows a stretch of the Wanganui River at Pipiriki, with a wooden fence (or platform) and whare at the far right. Two canoes are pulled up on to the bank in the centre foreground (one with a ornate carved prow), and there is a waka with four figures in it, in the middle of the river. Five figure are bathing in the river off a shallow point. On the bank at the left are further huts and fences or raised platforms. There is a bird, possibly a kingfisher, on a branch in the left foreground, and flax and other plants in the foreground. Description: Shows the front of a small single-storey cottage with thatched roof and a verandah supported by five pillars. The cottage has two or three front windows and a front door, two chimneys and a lean-to, with a picket fence running from the house on both sides. A circular garden bed is in front and a cabbage tree, flax and another plant, possibly a fern, are to the right The Rev. Dr Robert Maunsell lived in this raupo cottage from 1838 to 1843. It was superseded by a 6-room wooden dwelling that burned down after three weeks' occupation. Maunsell and his wife were hosts to Governor Hobson in March 1842, with Chief Justice Martin, Abel Best and Edward Shortland also present. Dr Johnson was away from New Zealand between November 1844 and November 1846. A road runs to the right and a group of four people stands in the distance William Barnard Rhodes was involved with the purchase of lands in Waikanae, Porirua and Wellington from the Te Ati Awa and Ngati Toa tribes. Many of these purchases were later disputed by the tribes concerned. Rhodes had also invested heavily in trading and whaling operations in the Kapiti and Wellington districts as well as Northland.
