Description: The back and front cover spread of what is actually a programme for "Carmen up to data" in Christchurch in 1893, shows scenes from the show "Forty thieves", which had played the previous year at the Princess Theatre Melbourne. The illustrations mainly feature a beautiful dancing girl. In one scene she pours oil into a jar containing a person. In another she dances, watched by an admirer in a tree. "Carmen up to data" was a musical burlesque, a spoof of Bizet's 1875 opera "Carmen". It premiered at the Gaiety Theatre London, on 4 October 1890, and toured internationally reaching Australia by 1892. This cover has been overprinted for use in the New Zealand season. The conductor of the orchestra was Lieut Stansell, and the accompanist Captain Packer.
