Description: Shows the Hon John Edward Jenkinson Christchurch Legislative Council 119892-1914 John Edward Jenkinson was born in Dunedin and educated at State schools. He served his time to boilermaking in a Dunedin foundry and shipbuilding yard. In 1882 he joined the first labour union - the Dunedin Boilermakers, by which he was elected President (1883) and deputed to form unions in other cities. He was one of the committee of three appointed to draw up rules for the Canterbury Trades Council and for the railway servants' union. He was called to the Legislative Council in 1892 (one of a number appointed to create a government majority) and was a member till 1914. On retiring (1914) he contested the Clutha seat in the House of Representatives. Was President for some years of the Early Settlers' Association. Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).

Description: Portrait of Wiremu Parata Te Kakakura Waipunaahau seated out side a raupo whare. Possibly taken at a hui on 12 September 1891, when Ngāti Huia gathered to receive the infant son of Governor Onslow, who had been named Huia out of respect for Māori. This photograph was previously identified as being at Karaka Bay, Wellington This photo was probably taken at the same time other photos in this collection were also taken at Karaka Bay with Heeni Te Rei (a close relative of Parata's) and Kereopa Tukumaru. Heeni is wearing black and this may indicate that the occassion is a tangihanga (a funeral). Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).

Description: Shows the seated figure of "Willie the Inkslinger" (William Pember Reeves), about to throw an ink-bottle labelled "Lyttelton times", at the back of the retreating ink-splattered figure of Zealandia. His pockets contain rolled papers labelled: Leader, Lyttelton times, Dirt, Star. On the wall is a map labelled 'Canterbury electoral districts'. Identification and dating: Reeves has been identified by his appearance and by his known liberal views. Date determined by start-operating date of Whitcombe & Tombs operations in Christchurch, and by the period of Reeves' editorship of Lyttelton times. It is not known if Whitcombe and Tombs printed this cartoon as a supplement to any particular Christchurch newspaper. Description: New Zealand is shown as a small boy in sailor costume riding on the tail of a kangaroo bounding across the Tasman sea from New Zealand to Australia. Exhibition and book captions read - New Zealand supporters of federation [with Australia] stressed the shared British stock, language, Queen, God and trade possibilities. New Zealand would progress by 'leaps and bounds' with an assured market for cereals, fruit and some manufactured goods. South Seas isolation was another reason for embracing federation. There was uneasiness about growing German power and French intentions in the Pacific. There was also fear, however, irrational, of the 'yellow peril'. Exhibited in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' exhibition of cartoons on the New Zealand-Australian relationship curated by Ian F. Grant of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and exhibited in the National Library Gallery from 28 November 2001 to 24 February 2002 to mark the centenary of Australian Federation. Also exhibited at X Space Gallery, Auckland University of Technology, Auckland in mid-March 2002 and at Old Parliament House, Canberra, Australia from 26 March 2003 to 29 June 2003. Description: Text outlines Isaac Featherston's occupation of 28,000 acres at a very low rent, and implies that Featherston is reluctant to answer questions about it. The New Zealander for 21 November 1857, Page 3, makes this comment: "If this be true, one cannot wonder that Dr. Featherston disapproves of such personal questions being put to him on the platform, or that he and his colleagues have made such desperate efforts to retain the Government in their hands. Nor can we wonder that the feeling should now generally pervade the Province, that it would be better to encourage a healthy tide of self-paid immigration by resorting to the system of selling land on credit, in proportion to passage-money —rather than raise large loans on the Provincial lands to import labourers for the large run-holders". Description: Text purports to give the programme for a concert starring Bowen and Beswick. However, it is a satirical political poster commenting on two of the contestants for the Kaiapoi seat in the 1875 general election, Charles Bowen and Joseph Beswick. The election coincided with the 25th jubilee of the Canterbury Province. Bowen won, but not by as large a margin as the poster predicted. "Songs" featured in the concert include "Charlie is my darling", "How many legs has a sheep", "Not for Joseph", "Kaiapoi was glad when they departed".
