Description: Shows two cottages close to one another, one with a thatched roof, at a bend on the banks of the Avon, in a treeless landscape, close to Barbadoes Street, the landing place for boats coming up the Avon from the Estuary and sea. The Bricks was built of bricks made by the Deans brothers of Riccarton. There are several other smaller buildings on the right. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - title and date in ink: 'The Bricks' Wed Nov 1851, Canterbury, looking north. Also several partly illegible numbers top right, starting with '19' and ending in 'to 23', this last crossed out. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink, 127 x 178 mm

Description: A view of The Bricks, the landing place on the Avon River by Barbadoes Street. Shows the river bank, a house close to the water and a second smaller house further back. On the right is a Maori man with a taiaha Other Titles - The Bricks Inscriptions: Recto - bottom centre - City of Christchurch Nov 14 1849 [in faint pencil]. On the reverse are various notes including carefully-written Maori names in another hand, one being Hoani Paratene followed by a note in Mantell's hand 'by Topi & Taiaroa.
